Questions to Ask if You Remodel Your Home

Remodeling can be challenging for a family. Living in your home while it is going through remodeling construction, however, can be very challenging. You have made the commitment to stay in your home and not put it on the market for sale, instead you have chosen to make modifications. So now you find yourself talking to remodeling contractors and you are getting well intended suggestions from family and friends, (all of them experts, of course).

There are a few questions you should ask your contractor though. There is nothing worse then getting half way through a job just to find out that your contractor has issues in his background, and now they are your issues. Consider the following questions for the contractor:

• How long have you been in business?
• Who will be the project supervisor?
• Will employees or subcontractors be working on the project?
• Does the company carry workers compensation and liability insurance?
• How will you approach this project?
• How many similar projects have you completed?
• How much repeat and referral business do you have?
• Are you certified in remodeling or do you hold any special training or education?
• May I have a list of references related to those projects?

Once you receive a list of references, give them a call and ask the following;
• Were you able to communicate easily with the contractor?
• Did the project supervisor and crew show up on time?
• Was the job done on schedule?
• Was the contract fulfilled?
• Did the remodeling contractor stay in contact throughout the project?
• Were you pleased with the outcome (you may even ask to see the final product)?
• Would you use their services again?
The answers to the questions above should give you a little comfort in knowing you have hired a reputable contractor and your finished product should be satisfying and those decisions will render your present home a show stopper.
