If it has the label, “As Seen on TV” I likely have one somewhere around my home. My husband just cannot resist trying out the latest and greatest. A trip to Walgreen’s for him is like a trip to Toys-R-Us for the kids. So, I was not at all surprised when he came in the door with the Topsy Turvy Upside Down Tomato Planter.
We grow a garden every year, including tomatoes. My husband followed the instructions and placed one Roma tomato plant into the container and we hung it from a shepherd’s hook in the yard where it would get plenty of sunshine and we could water it easily. What we did not realize was as the tomato grew, its stems grew in an upward direction until the first tomato had enough weight to pull the stem back towards earth. Soon after our first ripe tomato, the plant had grown too long for the shepherd’s hook and we had to find a new place to hang the planter.
As the plant continues to grow we have realized we don’t have anything tall enough and strong enough to support the weight of the container and keep the plant from touching the ground, while it is still within reach of a watering can. This would work best for you if you have an arbor or a similar tall structure that will support your new plant; we do not.
Our tomato continues to produce tasty ripe fruit and there are many designs online that are available for you to make one at home, but finding a place to hang it is the biggest challenge of all. Unless of course, there is a do it yourself, as seen on TV, Topsy Turvy Arbor? I’m sure my husband would give it a try!
