Living on Amelia Island has many advantages when you enjoy sports, especially football. I have to confess: I am an Amelia Island Football Fanatic! I enjoy other sports somewhat, but football changes the way I do a multitude of things. It definitely runs my weekends starting this time of year. It takes up a lot of my time during the week reading about what is happening to the teams and the players on those teams. I belong to many different websites devoted entirely to the game. Face it- I am Addicted and am not going to get in any twelve step program for it. I like it!
19 years ago when my wife and I moved to Fernandina Beach from Atlanta I was a devoted Atlanta Falcons Fan. The local television stations never played the Falcons so I almost gave up on professional football all together. I always remained an avid college football fan though. Then in 1995, the Jacksonville Jaguars begin their first season and I became a pro football fan again and an avid Jags fan.
I must admit though that my true football fanaticism lies with the NCAA. Living here on Amelia Island you get a diverse selection of college fans. There are lots of Georgia fans, Florida fans, Florida State fans and many other schools are represented as well. Having gone to The University of Georgia I am a die hard Bulldawg fan! “Go Dawgs – Sic em‚ woof, woof, woof”! I do enjoy watching all of the neighboring teams, although not nearly as much as my Dawgs.
I still love Pro ball too and have been a commissioner for a fantasy football league for many years. For those of you who have never played fantasy football it changes the way you watch football on a Sunday. You are not only interested in how your favorite team does, but how certain players are doing. Notice that all football games now have a fantasy ticker that brings individual updates constantly to all who are interested.
This year I want to write a weekly (hopefully) story on the football world from a Fernandina Beach view. I don’t want to leave anyone out, so feel free to comment on your teams as well. With preseason camp opening this week for the Jaguars, I can feel the blahs that come about when there is no football on television starting to fade away. Yeah, I hope everyone‚Äôs team has a super year, just not as good as my teams- Go Dawgs and Go Jags.
