Happy Halloween Trick or Treats

Pure Trick or Treats

Pure Trick or Treats

As I’m diving more and more into the atrocity of food chemicals in our society, I have a suggestion for the health future of our children.¬† This Halloween have your cake and eat it too: help kids fill their pillow cases full of organic and fair trade candy! This will not only help prevent expensive dentist bills due to refined-sugar overload, but will also help create sustainable ecology and economies all over the island.

Look for these alternatives to the usual synthetic loot; they can all be ordered online (obviously a little late for this year, but maybe in time for the Holiday Season):
1.    Yummy-gummy goodness: Try Surf Sweets Gummy Worms or Organic Classic Gummi Bears from Surf Sweets or Let’s Do Organic, both made with organic natural sweeteners and sans artificial colors and flavors.
2.    The new chew: Look for Glee Gum, a natural gum (no synthetic plastics) in cinnamon, peppermint and tangerine flavors, made with sustainably harvested natural chicle from Central American rainforests.
3.    A smarter kind of Smarties®: Sun Drops by SunspireРcandy-coated chocolate or peanut bites with no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.
4.    Fruit Lollipops by Pure Fun or Yummy Earth: organic lollipops in both old and new flavors- lemon, green apple, watermelon, goji berry, tangerine, and pomegranate. No synthetic colors here; their colorings come from red beet, red cabbage, annatto extract, turmeric extract, purple carrots, and alfalfa extract!
5.    Fair trade eco-chocolate: Try organic dark/milk/white chocolate squares from Green & Black’s, organic and fair trade dark chocolate bites from Equal Exchange, or ethically-traded milk-chocolate squares by Endangered Species.
6.    Crystal Cuts: Colorful old-fashioned hard candies from Hammond’s in Grape, Orange, Lemon, and Cherry.
7.    Maple hard candies: Leaf-shaped candies flavored and colored with real maple syrup.
8.    Spicy Cinnamon Candy by Pure Fun: This certified organic, vegan, gluten-free, kosher candy actually contains red cabbage to get its color!
9.    Organic dark-chocolate covered raisins by Sunspire: a much healthier version of Raisinettes®.
10.  Organic Jelly Beans by Surf Sweets
11.   More pep in your step: Honey Mint Patties by Honey Acres are an incredibly pure version of Pep® mint and chocolate patties- their ingredients are only honey, unsweetened chocolate, and peppermint.

Chip Shot Tips on the Fernandina Golf Update

Fernandina Chip Shot

Fernandina Chip Shot

I knew the weather would get back to normal. Last week the north-eastern sea board states got snow, so Fernandina Beach got cool cloudy days with a few showers. Not a bad trade off, but the last few days it has been warm again and great for golf, not too hot and not too cold! The winter seed program is beginning to take root with most of the golf courses around the area. Putting surfaces may be slower than normal but they should be smoother and quicker in a couple of weeks once the grass becomes more established.

Have you been working on your golf game? Last week we talked about the putting stroke so this week we will explore the chip shot. Remember the shoulders around the spine? Remember! The chip shot uses the same shoulder movements as the putting stroke but now we add a little weight shift to increase our distance. This can be tricky because timing is most important. This shot has little loft and stays low with more roll. The weight shift should be created with the feet and good balance be used throughout the stroke. Try not to use the knees and hips to shift your weight. This can change the spine angle and create a reverse weight shift. This is, like the putting stroke, a mechanical stroke moving only the feet to shift the weight and the shoulders to swing the club. It’s simple, only two parts. Practice this for a while and next week we will put a few angles in the swing with the pitch shot or half swing.

If you have any questions regarding golf instruction and play around the area, call the pros at Fernandina Beach Golf Club. The public is welcome and check out the web site www.fernandinabeachgolfclub.com for great deals on golf and more. FBGS is a great place for breakfast and lunch with banquet facilities for parties up to 120 or more.

Come and play a round with us.

Amelia Island Business Grand Opening Celebrations

debonair Grand Opening

debonair Grand Opening

Small business is booming on Amelia Island as we attended two exciting business grand opening celebrations this week in Fernandina Beach, Florida. The Cabell Insurance Group has moved to a new location, next to Beef O’Brady’s in the Publix Shopping Center, and invited the community to meet the new owner, Joel Shapiro.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony, speeches were given by a member of the Amelia Island-Fernandina Beach-Yulee Chamber of Commerce and by Shapiro, who was warm and sincere. Face painting, child identification, refreshments, quotes and free chair massages were just part of the activities that added to their celebration.

The next Grand Opening was at debonair, a brand new designer handbag and accessory boutique located at 2380 Sadler Road. With exciting brand names such as Rampage, Lodis and Hype, their gift items, sandals, jewelry, scarves and belts are quality pieces with quite reasonable prices.

They too, invited the community and a good crowd showed up to share in the refreshments, participate in the raffle and show support for local business.

This video is just a sampling of the grand openings in case you weren’t able to attend these exciting events.

We have written several pieces about the negative main stream media news and all of their stories of gloom and doom, but here on Amelia Island, our little community still knows that small business makes the world go ‘round! Congratulations to both companies, we wish you many years of success!

Halloween Costume Party Humor

Halloween Costume Party Humor

Halloween Costume Party Humor

A couple was invited to a swanky costume party. When the wife suddenly got a terrible headache and told her husband to go to the party alone. He protested, but she argued and said she was going to take some aspirin and go to bed and there was no need for his good time being spoiled by not going.

So he took his costume and away he went. The wife, after sleeping soundly for about an hour, awakened without pain and, as it was still early, decided to go the party.

Since her husband did not know what her costume was, she thought she would have some fun by watching her husband to see how he acted when she was not with him.

She joined the party and soon spotted her husband cavorting around on the dance floor, dancing with every nice woman he could, and copping a little feel here and a little kiss there. His wife sidled up to him and being a rather seductive babe herself, he left his current partner high and dry and devoted his time to the new babe that had just arrived. She let him go as far as he wished, naturally, since he was her husband.

Finally, he whispered a little proposition in her ear and she agreed. So off they went to one of the cars and had a quickie. Just before unmasking at midnight, she slipped away, went home, put the costume away and got into bed, wondering what kind of explanation he would make for his behavior.

She was sitting up reading when he came in, and she asked what kind of a time he had. He said, “Oh, the same old thing. You know I never have a good time when you’re not there.”

“Did you dance much?” She asked.

“I’ll tell you, I never even danced one dance. When I got there, I met Pete, Bill Brown and some other guys, so we went into the den and played poker all evening. But you’re not going to believe what happened to the guy I loaned my costume to….”

Halloween and Florida – Georgia Hangover Cures

Caught up in Halloween!!! Was it Georgia or Florida?

Caught up in Halloween!!! Was it Georgia or Florida?

Now, most folks celebrate Halloween tomorrow night. Not so on Amelia Island. Guess that has something to do with the fact that nobody wants to have two parties on one night.

Seeing that the Florida – Georgia Football game has very strong sentiments in both camps here on the island between Florida and Georgia; Amelia Island being a “save haven” vacation location for many Georgians, almost everyone, win or loose will have a party or two. Some to forget the misery, the others to celebrate victory.

In many cases that means that some heavy alcoholic consumption is warranted in either case, but not to miss out on Halloween, Amelia has opted to have their scary Costume parties a day early as I’m writing this (I’ve seen some scary football outfits too that most certainly could replace a Halloween costume).

All this heavy intake¬† may call for some early and late morning sickness…¬† No not pregnancy induced, that maybe in 9 months from now, but from all the mixes that people tend to gulp down over the next 36 hours.

Here are some Hangover Cures and tips if you must be intoxicated!

Preparations:

  • Never drink on an empty stomach!
  • Eat fatty foods such as bacon and eggs,¬† but avoid fast food. Keep nibbling on stuff during your extended alcohol consumption and drink a glass of water (no soda’s) in between alcoholic beverages.
  • If you can, stick to one kind of drink and never “switch down” – going from a strong alcoholic beverage to beer or wine, but always go up if you have to. Start with beer or wine and if you “need” something stronger don’t start with shots but with mixed. Leave the shots for last.
  • Even, if you can, stick to one brand. If you are a straight up scotch drinker, sprinkle some pepper on the scotch or whiskey before you add ice. The pepper will bind the “bad layer” of Glycol and drag it to the bottom of the glass. Never finish the glass until the last drop or else you will still consume the glycol.
  • If food is not handy, take a candy or better yet eat a banana. Also orange peels (rinse well before consumption) but only the “orange part” and chew on a quarter peel once and a while during the night. You’ll thank me in the morning.
  • If cranberry juice (unsweetened) is present at the party, have a small glass when you feel that alcohol is taking a toll.

Well that should get you safely through the night and if not you can give the following remedies a try.

Hangover cures:

Beyond the regular alkaseltzer there is much more you can do.

  • First take a shower, how painful it may be and use a washcloth to rub yourself dry. Not a towel but a washcloth and keep on rubbing. It probably will take twenty minutes or so to dry yourself off but that’s the idea. You should step out of the shower looking red like a lobster from all the rubbing. Trust me, in most cases it will completely cure your hangover without any additional remedies.
  • If the shower does not suffice, drink a concoction of: One raw egg, a shot glass of cane syrup (not corn syrup), two oranges, and two slices of pineapple (don’t add any alcohol or milk!!!) and eat a hearty meal (but nothing like cornflakes or other pre-processed puffed stuff) with eggs, bacon and toast or even a steak is great, but no potatoes (they’ll get you drunk all over again).

This combination should get you completely fit within 45 min.

In closing I press on you for your family and friends and all those people you don’t know: DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!

Car Dealers Are Eager to Deal

Waiting for a new owner

Waiting for a new owner

Have you ever heard the old saying, “You need to strike when the iron is hot?”¬† There are times when¬†we need to consider¬†doing something out of the “norm” simply because the timing is just right.¬† While doing some research on the economy I have found that we are now in a great position to think about purchasing a new car or truck.

I know, I know,¬† what is he talking about now, he must be nuts to think anyone would run out and buy a new car. But…the iron is hot, right now.¬† Just check out all the signs on your way to the Wal-Mart Super Center in Yulee. The auto industry is not in the best of shapes and dealers are willing to cut almost any deal just to move their inventories as the manufacturers’ sword of Damocles is hanging over their heads.¬† Chrysler and GM are planning on pulling the plug on many dealers and soon.¬† Chrysler is poised to dump 789 dealers while GM is scheduled to close 1,100.¬† This is all inventory that must go somewhere and other dealers, in most cases, don’t want the inventory due to the slow sales they are experiencing.

If you are thinking about a new car or truck, I suggest you take a drive to your local dealer and just look around.¬† Talk to them about a deal, just see where it goes.¬† Don’t worry about warranty even if the dealer you purchase from is closed down, your warranty will be fine.¬† Ask the dealer about financing.¬† There are many great terms available from the financial division of the manufacturer.¬† Take a look at not only purchasing but also at leasing.¬† I talked with a friend just last week who is thinking of a new van for his family. He was offered a great deal with very low monthly payments on a loaded, brand new family van with DVD players for the kids. Yup, the iron is hot and this may be the season to wrap a ribbon around a vehicle, especially if you are in good standing with the bank.

Fernandina Beach Municipal Golf Course

Fernandina Beach Golf

Dollar for dollar, you likely won’t find a better municipal golf course than the one in Fernandina Beach, Florida. Golfing on Amelia Island is a staple to many who visit or live here in NE Florida and we had the opportunity to play a around with Scott Womble, Director of Golf for the Fernandina Beach Golf Course.

This 27 hole golf course features three nine-hole designs nestled among the majestic oaks of Amelia Island and is only 35 minutes from the Jacksonville International Airport. Bring your next golf outing to Fernandina Beach and experience Florida golf at its best with lush scenery and a sub-tropical climate. The oldest nine is the North Course; the West Course was added in the mid 1950s and the South Course was designed in 1972. Each course measures well over 3000 yards from the championship tees. Generous fairways and the warm Florida sun make all 27 holes a relaxing challenge for each of your senses.

Membership packages are available for city residents and non-residents as well as Senior and Junior memberships to keep the game well within your budget. Tournaments, weddings, banquets, retirement celebrations, birthday parties and other special events have been held in the beautiful clubhouse with a full service restaurant that will pamper your next event with a multitude of culinary combinations available.

No time to play? Swing by and practice at the driving range or greens that are maintained to the same high standards given to the course itself.

The full service pro shop carries the latest equipment and the newest fashions to satisfy any shopper’s craving for the best golf has to offer with brands like Titleist, Callaway, Nike, Ashworth and Cutter & Buck. Don’t take my word for it, come see for yourself. The course is located at 2800 Bill Melton Road. Call (904) 277-7370 for banquet reservations, tee times or driving range information.

The Word is to Invest in Brazil

Land of Hope and Glory

Land of Hope and Glory

I may not personally like investment bankers Goldman Sachs corporate ethics, but they are the world’s greatest traders and when they share their analysis of a major economic trend it’s best to listen and study how you might prosper from their advice. Goldman Sachs believes Brazil is in the long-term sweet spot in terms of economic competitiveness.  In addition to a young and rapidly expanding population, Brazil is at the heart of the commodity boom and is likely to see massive injections of government stimulus as they prepare for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

In addition to these strong fundamental growth drivers, Goldman also says valuations and risks in Brazil remain relatively low in comparison to other markets: “Forward valuations suggest it is hazardous to be underweight Brazil.” Relates GS:  “Brazilian sovereign risk and interest rates are at or near record lows, while prospects for sustainable economic growth are possibly better than at any period in the last few decades.”

Goldmans says the Brazilian Bovespa equity market could jump 30% to 85,000 by 2010.  Goldman recently said their favorite markets heading into earnings season were the BRIC markets as they continue to favor heavy exposure to emerging markets over developed markets:

“We favor exposure to Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRICs) over developed markets given the significantly higher GDP growth outlook. We believe investors should use this basket to identify stocks with high exposure to emerging market growth. Long/short investors should consider buying this basket against the S&P 500 to gain exposure to higher growth in the BRICs countries versus slower growth in developed regions.”

Goldman isn‚Äôt the only big bank with a heavy overweight towards Brazil and emerging markets.¬†¬† Jamie Dion’s JP Morgan has recently made similar statements with regards to Brazil and emerging markets.

The new EM trade

Emerging economies are exiting the crisis relatively unscathed and with much improved economic, financial, and fiscal positions versus developed economies. This means medium-term outperformance of their equities, currencies, and credit. Near term, it means their local debt will likely underperform, except for the highest-yielding markets, which should benefit from the search for yield. With much of the EM growth engine coming from commodity-hungry China, this should be bullish for commodities.

It is very hard to find holes in this argument.  If I were a long-term investor I’d likely have Brazil at the very top of my investment list….Even on the agricultural and energy fronts Brazil is now a powerhouse.

Ocean Going Cities

Half of Amelia Island's Population on a Ship

Half of Amelia Island's Population on a Ship

When Royal Caribbean International took delivery of the Oasis of the Seas yesterday, the world’s largest cruise ship to-date, this reinforced my dream of living permanently in a city on the oceans. Shipbuilder STX Europe in Turku Finland delivered the ship 12 days ahead of its U.S. debut in Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades, where the ship will homeport during its inaugural Caribbean season.

While the enormity of this vessel has now become reality, many Caribbean destination ports are scrambling to get ready for the anchoring of this mammoth. At 16 decks high this super structure towers high over the three or four story buildings in the Caribbean ports of Philipsburg, St.Maarten or Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas. With 2,700 staterooms divided over 7 neighborhoods, the 220,000 Gross Registered Tons vessel carries 5,400 guests, more than 2,500 service staff, shopping malls, a slew of restaurants and more services than any town this size can provide to its people (except of course golf courses).

To give a sample impression of the economic impact this vessel can make to a Caribbean island economy, just multiply the number of guests by $100 average spending x 52 weeks and this calculates a good $25 million on an annual basis. That creates power to the nth degree.

The delivery of the Oasis of the Seas begins a series of events that will culminate in the ship’s naming in Fort Lauderdale on Nov. 30.

Living on Park Avenue

Living on Park Avenue

Today, the ship departs Turku on its first Atlantic crossing, which will be chronicled at OasisoftheSeas.com. Webisodes will be posted daily and a Google Maps application will enable people to follow the Oasis’s trip.

The ship will be unveiled to the public on ABC’s “Good Morning America” news program during a special live broadcast on Nov. 20.

The night before, pop superstar Rihanna will be the first performer to take the stage on the Oasis. She will perform at the AquaTheater, the ship’s outdoor amphitheater.

The official naming ceremony for Oasis will take place on Nov. 30 during a one-night inauguration fundraiser to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Tickets for the naming begin at $750 per person!

Lipomassage and Body Sculpting by Fine Endermologie

Susan Fine of Fine Endermologie

Susan Fine of Fine Endermologie

For nearly five years, Susan Fine of Fine Endermologie has treated clients aged 17 to 73 with Lipomassage, a customized and non-invasive body sculpting treatment. For men, this means reducing love handles and pot bellies, or defining that six pack you’ve worked so hard for. Women seek treatment for reducing cellulite on the arms, back, stomach, hips, thighs, knees and other problem areas, they desire firming the skin’s appearance, increasing circulation or reducing the appearance of scars.

Everyone’s body is different and Fine offers a 15 minute complimentary consultation to discuss how the procedure works, the results you desire and to establish a treatment program individualized for each of her patients.

Despite regular exercise and the strictest diet, the body will store fat in certain areas. The French developed a technique that is scientifically proven to reshape your body and lose inches. Lipomassage is administered by a machine that features individual motorized rollers that are adjustable for a deep tissue massage. A specialized bodysuit is worn for comfort, hygiene and modesty during treatments.

A study by Vanderbilt University found Endermologie treatments to build Collagen by 130%. Other studies reported increased blood flow of 400 to 500% and an increase in venous flow by 200 to 300%.

Before and After Lipomassage

Before and After Lipomassage

There are no special diets required with endermologie, however, to be in good health, we all should exercise and eat moderate, well-balanced meals. Drinking plenty of water is essential to flush waste and toxins from the body, especially after physical exercise or any type of massage treatment.

When you go on a diet plan, you tend to lose the weight in the face, breasts and upper body. When this occurs, wrinkles are accentuated and the body loses definition and tone and skin takes on a droopy appearance. Adding lipomassage to a healthy regimen of nutrition and exercise allows you to target precisely where you want to get rid of unwanted localized fat.

Lipomassage is personalized for you, targeting your specific areas of concern and a course of treatment is designed. After the desired results are achieved, you will need to maintain the new you with follow up sessions. Think of it like a pedicure, manicure or having your hair streaked. You look fabulous when the pedicure is done, but after a few weeks, you need to return for a follow up to keep those toes on display, right?

Fine Endermologie is now located at 2382 Sadler Road in Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island. Give Susan Fine a call at (904) 703-4026 and let her tell you what lipomassage can do for you!
