Amazon visionary Bezos deserves a big piece of this cake
This story explains why we keep pointing at a new world of opportunities in a rapidly changing new economy.
November 1994 Jeff Bezos launched a new business model to sell books, CD’s and DVD’s to the general public, all on line and named it Amazon.com.  This new business quickly became on the hottest Internet business of the times and managed to survive the carnage of the dot com bust in the early part of 2000.  Amazon, like many businesses, was not projected to show a profit for the first 4-5 years of business.  This sparked many complaints from shareholders as they watched many other e-companies post huge profits in less time.  Finally in the fourth quarter of 2001 Amazon made it’s first reported earnings of 5 million dollars.
Today Amazon is earning between 350-675 million net profits each and every year, with no end in sight.  Jeff Bezos has entered the ranks of billionaires and the future looks great. Partially responsible for these high returns is the company’s willingness to be diversified.  In addition to books, music and videos, Amazon is now offering items such as software, consumer electronics, kitchen items, lawn and garden equipment, baby products, electronics and much more.
According to the 2008 web site compete.com Amazon has attracted some 615 million visitors annually.¬†¬†Upon arriving at¬†the site customers are given the option to rate products, review past comments and browse the content of books.¬† The site has been rated by many to be one of the easiest, most user friendly sites on line today. And the process is still improving. Amazon’s Kindle, the electronic “book” can store 1,500 books on half inch thick device with a 9.7″ screen. Of course old fashioned books will still be a decorative and usable item in many homes, but don’t be surprised when all educational books will very soon disappear in a Kindle download. Easy to retrieve, archived on keywords and no more heavy carrying cases. It will kiss the old Samsonite briefcase goodbye, unless you need one to carry lunch in.
I have shopped Amazon many times and I truly can say I have never had a problem, the transactions went smooth and delivery has always been on time.  This just goes to show what diversification and great customer care can do for a company.  We all like to do business with people who mean what they say, and say what they mean.  No hidden agendas or bait and switch here, just good customer care, from start to finish.  With so many features and products offered, I wish Amazon.com a very happy birthday and much success in the future.
