A driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and their vehicle hit a 69 KV Transmission Pole around 1:00 AM this morning. The vehicle clipped the pole in half causing a power outage to a large portion of Amelia Island, affecting approximately 6,000 customers including the Fernandina Beach High School and Rayonier Corporation. Container Corporation was able to continue operating using their generator system.
Our sources say the lines became de-energized and a commercial semi-truck became entangled in the downed wires. The driver of the semi is fine, and though we have no official report of the condition of the driver that may have caused the power outage near Sonny’s on A1A, we have heard that he was not seriously injured.
A new pole has been re-set and crews worked restringing the lines and power was re-established at 9:35 AM. Traffic on Eighth Street was diverted onto 14th Street while the agencies involved restore normalcy to our community.
