This is the year to become a Frugalista. Be smart, be creative and be frugal; this is really what it takes to be seasonally savvy. In Northeast Florida, we are at a disadvantage because we have no idea what the weather will be on any given day in December. It could be 50 degrees or it could be 72 degrees, so we have to be smart in planning.
Ladies, go ahead and wear that little black dress you wore last New Year’s Eve. By adding a shawl or a blazer, and planning for either sandals or boots, depending on the weather, no one will notice that you are re-using a dress. If some actually comments, “Didn’t you wear that last year?” Simply respond, “Yes, thank you.” Momma always said to kill them with kindness! Instead of purchasing Swarovki crystal earrings, select a pair of delicate ornaments from your own Christmas tree. You will be surprised at the compliments you’ll receive. If the party is whimsical – call and ask the host or hostess if you aren’t sure Рgo ahead and wear a sequined Santa hat or white felt reindeer antlers with bells.
Guys, it can be just as easy for you. Just about every year you likely receive a gift of a holiday sweater, sweatshirt, t-shirt or tie from an in-law. Wear them! Wear them all at once if it is cold enough! What other occasion during the year can you make use of this over-the-top apparel? People will smile when they read, “Got Presents?” across your chest. No one will be offended if you have snowmen on your pockets. So, go ahead and wear the Santa hat, with the red and green striped knee socks. Put on your favorite shorts, add a pair of suspenders to the tackiest holiday shirt you own and… “Poof” You are an Elf!
If you find yourself invited to a fancier party, plan now to lose those few pounds and get back into your only suit or that dress you wore to your cousins wedding three years ago. Painstakingly, you can sleep in rollers and avoid a costly trip to the hair salon. Recycle what you already have in your closet, or shop the consignment stores if you must purchase something to wear and you will save a bundle this year accepting all of the holiday party invitations you receive. Have fun attending as many parties as you can. Grazing the buffet and dessert tables will more than satisfy your appetite which easily translates into free dinner! Don’t let the economy get you down.
