The Internet takes over the Music Business
I read an article this morning in the business section of the Florida Times Union of the closing of a very music store closing it’s doors in Jacksonville Beach.¬† The article went on to say that the owner just couldn’t see how he could keep it open.¬† Sales are down and there was nothing in the future that indicated they would get any better.
I have shopped at this music store before and I must say it was one of the better ones.¬† They carried almost everything you would want and if they didn’t have it they would order it for you.¬† So what happened to this upscale music outlet?
The changing face of business has claimed another victim.  The owner said in the article that it was the Internet and the availability of downloading music that played a large part of the reason for the closing.  I completely understand that if business is down and there is nothing on the horizon that indicates it will get any better then you have to make some soul searching decisions.
You could do what the music store owner choose to do, simply close up, go out of business.¬† Another approach would be to figure out what would work in a business such as this and make changes that would add more business and increase the bottom line.¬† In the world of music there is much more to sell then just the music. I know adding another business model to the existing one may have made a huge difference and perhaps this would not have been just another victim, but a survivor. Vinyl records and turntables are finding their way back into the true music lovers’ living rooms. Specialization in compilations is a big thing now that the industry has been recording tens of millions of tunes over the last hundred years.
Yes, the face of business is changing and if those existing businesses want to stay in business then they have to make changes if they are to overcome poor sales.  Once again we see the world of the Internet changing how we will all do business in tomorrow.  I will miss the music store in Jax Beach, but I guess I always have the option of downloading what I want until somebody smarter comes along and opens another music store, 21st century style.
