As I navigated my way into a spot, I asked my daughter, “What on earth do they have on their sign? This place is packed!”
“We have hini Progresso for 99 cents”, she said.
“What”? I asked in a confused state.
“Oh… wait… We have H1N1”, she laughed, “and Progresso for 99 cents”.
I turned off the engine and studied the sign wondering just what message they were trying to convey to their customers. If they have H1N1, why would I want to shop here? If I had H1N1, maybe I would want Progresso for 99 cents? My daughter has already had the virus; should I send her into the store alone with the short shopping list… just in case they really meant that they have H1N1? Or was it the 99 cent Progresso driving customers to the store?
In a brick and mortar retail establishment, you want to get people in the door… and Walgreens was packed with customers at 3:15 on a Tuesday afternoon.
A good billboard grabs attention and this one caught mine with a simple and memorable message. While I doubt they really have H1N1, I suspect they may have the H1N1 vaccine. I don’t know how much thought Walgreen’s employees put into the wording of the sign, but either way, it got my attention and now I am talking about it on a Website that receives hundreds of thousands of hits per month! Good job, Walgreens!
