Watch Out for Thieves and Burglars
With the 2009 Christmas shopping season well underway there is defiantly a “cheer” in the air.  Although this is the best time of the year for shopping, you still have to be cautious and aware to your surroundings.  Thieves are on high alert this holiday season and given the unusually tougher times everyone is experiencing they are more brazen than ever.  These “stealers” of the season, are very keen to those who are power shoppers and the buyers of expensive items and they do this by many different ways.  There are measures you can take to insulate yourself from the harm these thieves bring if you just use some “extra” common sense this season.
First be aware of your surroundings everywhere you go, this includes retail stores, restaurants, banks and gas stations.  Thieves lurk in the most unusual areas and will often search out an unsuspecting victim when they least expected it.  Use credit cards whenever possible, cash has a tendency to set off red flags to even those accepting the cash for goods purchased.  The more cash you have with you, the more of a target you become.
Malls and super centers will normally load any shopper with multiple bags or buggies full of items, when shopping at these establishments regardless of how many bags you have ask for assistance to you car.  Most of these centers offer security especially in the parking area.  Never walk alone to your car even if you have to resort to another shopper walking with you.
Your car is particularly vulnerable during this season.¬† When transporting purchased gifts make sure they are out of plain view.¬† Place items in your trunk or cover them with a towel if they must remain¬†up front¬†with you.¬† Lock you car both when you’re in it as well as when you are away no matter for what length of time, or time of day.¬† Small actions such as these will greatly reduce your chances of being robbed.
The family Christmas tree is always a focal point of American homes during the holiday season and every family wants to show off their master piece.  In addition to being decorated with lights and family heirlooms they are typically full of wrapped presents lying underneath them.  It’s ok to have presents under the tree but be selective as to what you place there weeks before Christmas day, store the more expensive gifts safely out of sight.  Be cautious when you’re away from  home, leaving window treatments open making your goods available to anyone who looks in is not a good idea.
Christmas is a great season and one that should be celebrated with family and friends.  Danger is everywhere and can be evaded if you keep on your toes and mindful that it exist.
