I agree with you fully, however I wouldn't call it "genetic mutation". And yes I was referring to the average height and thus leg space required by those persons that in "norm" now grow to well over 6.2 (even women) in Western Europe and especially Holland. It's not fair to stick to "1970" averages of 5.8. That was my point that airlines have to take that to a "2010" level.

Self induced obesity, as I said, will have to face the consequences and buy two seats.

I started flying for the first time in 1970 on a Boeing 707. The seat was comfortable but of course I was 19 and nobody in Europe had heard about McDonald's, Wendy's,Burger King,PizzaHut or Domino's or any fast food restaurant. Chain restaurants in the US were spearheaded by food philosophies engrained by French Master like Jacques Pepin at Howard Johnson. We still knew that legs were made for walking. What happened since, we did to ourselves. If you're talking about genetic mutation that made certain races grow taller as a result of better nutrition and health care, than I agree that airlines should consider adopting new standards, but if disability or handicap is not a reason for discounted air travel, that self imposed obesity is definitely not; and using two seats while paying for One is discounted travel in my book.

I think it is a knife that cuts on both ends. You cannot enforce adhering to 1970 population standards. People are growing taller, and wider. If this is a continuing trend that people are getting taller and therefore will need to "fold" into 1970 standard measurements, there is clearly something wrong in the upkeep of "standards.

On the other hand obesity caused by nothing more than eating habits (so no medical indication) will have to face the consequences like smokers, but your suggestion to create "special 5-6 row" seats accommodating oversized people at an additional charge seems the most viable solution on the short term. Yet a long term solution will have to take into consideration that airlines will have to comply to 2010 standards.
