Taking Theatre to Children in Nassau County Schools
Goal: Our goal is to present a 30 minute play at each of the Nassau County elementary schools.
Total Project Value: $800

Project Description
Amelia Community Theatre’s project involves taking a 30 minute play to elementary schools in Nassau County. Our greatest expense is for royalties for each performance. We have a troupe of adult actors called the Peppermint Players who perform for children and for seniors at assisted living facilities. We have traveled to preschools and elementary schools in Nassau County since 1981. However, we are not able to do this every year, due to resources. Funding would allow us to pay royalties for many more performances, thereby visiting more schools. We also need better sound equipment to use in the very large cafetoriums where we perform. We have often found that our play is the first live theatre that many of the children have ever seen. We encourage them to write and produce their own plays, using their imagination – creating their own costumes and sets. Our shows often have a gentle lesson, whether it is about recycling, tolerance, or accepting oneself. Funds will also be used for costumes, props, and set pieces. Everything we use for the play has to fit in our cars and be easily set up on the school stage.

Saving Pets In Need at Micah’s Place

Saving Pets In Need at Micah's PlaceIf you were in a violent relationship and the only way to escape was to leave your pet with your abuser, what would you do? Around the country, more than 71 percent of the women living with domestic violence report that their partners have threatened, injured, or killed the family pet according to the American Humane Association. In these situations, animal abuse is also a way for the abuser to control human victims, sending a message of “do what I say or you’re next”.

This abuse impacts every member of the household. Half of all incidents of animal cruelty coincide with violent outbursts against human family members. Children who witness domestic violence are three times more likely to treat animals with cruelty. This behavior then sets them on a path of future abuse toward animals or humans. Family members may also intervene in the abuse of a pet or human, putting themselves in harm’s way to prevent that individual from being harmed or killed. And knowing the danger that their pet will be in if they leave, Animal Legal Defense Fund stated in 2012, “Almost half of the women above who reported pet abuse chose to stay in a violent relationship because they didn’t want to leave their pet behind.”

But now, victims of domestic violence in Nassau County don’t have to choose between the safety of their pet and their own safety. Through the Saving Pets In Need (SPIN) program, women who come to the emergency shelter at Micah’s Place can bring their small pets with them to be housed in our on-site pet kennel. Having their pets nearby has proved to be a great source of comfort for the women and children who stay at Micah’s Place as they begin their healing process. A foster network is also in place to care for larger pets.

For more information about the SPIN program, or to find out how you can help, please call us at (904) 491-6364.
