Team Amelia at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca 2014

Team Amelia at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca 2014Visit Team Amelia at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on August 15 – 17, 2014.

The people of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance will again be part of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway, Laguna Seca, on Saturday and Sunday August 16th and 17th, 2014.

The historic car races at Laguna Seca are part of the annual festival and celebration of classic, historic and collector cars known worldwide simply as “Monterey Week”.

car-number-44“Please stop by and kick tires with us,” said Amelia Island Concours Founder and Chairman Bill Warner who will race the Group 44, ex-Paul Newman/Bob Tullius Triumph TR-6 on Sunday afternoon at 4:10 PM in race 7B.

“We’ll be in the paddock with David Hinton’s Heritage Motorsport folks… in the second row, near the gas pumps. It is a better location than being parked by the Port-O-Lets.”

lagunaThe car was on the Laguna Seca Sprints poster 40 years ago and this is the first time in four decades that the car has returned to race on the famous circuit.

“No, we’re not really a racing team.”

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is among the top automotive events in the world. Always held the second full weekend in March, “The Amelia” draws over 250 rare vehicles from collections around the world to The Golf Club of Amelia Island and The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island for a celebration of the automobile like no other. The Amelia Concours Increases Annual Giving

The Amelia Concours Increases Annual GivingAmelia Island, FL – The Amelia Concours d’Elegance, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, increased its annual gift to Spina Bifida of Jacksonville to $80,000 for 2014, an increase of 33 percent.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2015 the Amelia Concours was founded in 1996 to serve charities on Florida’s First Coast and to bring an award winning, world class concours to America’s east coast.

Founder Bill Warner’s only condition upon creating the Amelia Concours two decades ago was that it benefit charity. Since its founding the concours has donated over $2.5 million to such local pivotal charities as Community Hospice, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, Shop With Cops of Fernandina Beach and Nassau County and Spina Bifida of Jacksonville.

“This year we added Micah’s Place, the only Certified Domestic Violence Center serving Nassau County, Florida to our roster of charities,” said Bill Warner, founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

“Today we were able to increase our annual giving to Spina Bifida of Jacksonville by a third,” said Warner. “This is the primary reason the Amelia Concours exists. We don’t measure success by the number of spectators, or car count, but by our giving. More and bigger checks to our charities tell us it’s been a good year.”

Horch 853 and Scarab Win 19th Annual Amelia Island Councours d’Elegance

Jacksonville, FL – A 1937 Horch 853 and 1958 Scarab won the Best In Show honors on Sunday, March 9, at the 19th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, which attracted approximately 29,000 spectators throughout the weekend.

The Horch 853, owned by Bob and Anne Brockinton Lee of Sparks, Nevada, took home one of the most sought-after trophies in classic car pageantry, the prestigious Concours d’Elegance award. This fully restored automobile is one of only two Horchs ever to have been bodied by coachbuilder Voll & Ruhrbeck, which created custom coachwork for Bugatti, Maybach, Mercedes-Benz and Cord among others. Exhaustive efforts were made to restore this silver 853 to original standards, with no part going un-researched as to authenticity or originality by the restoration team.

The highly coveted Concours de Sport award was presented to the 1958 Scarab, owned by Miles C. Collier and presented The Revs Institute for Automotive Research of Naples, Fla. The three front engine Scarab sports racers built by Troutman and Barnes for Lance Reventlow, were created to contest the road courses of America against the great European marques, such as Ferrari and Maserati. Reventlow originally tried an Offenhauser engine in this car but the engine, designed to run on alcohol, never was successful running on gasoline as required by the sports car ruling body. It was then fitted with a small block Chevrolet V-8, which was perfect for the American road and airport circuits of the late ’50s and early-’60s.

“I want to congratulate our panel of esteemed judges on this year’s best of show selections,” said Bill Warner, Chairman and Founder of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “Both cars are excellent examples of unique pedigree and provenance and are well deserving of their awards. We worked hard to bring the best in automotive elegance and sport to this year’s event, and judging by our winners and the crowd I think we achieved our goal.”

More than 330 magnificent cars and motorcycles from around the world participated in the 2014 Concours, delighting attendees with an impressive automotive display of style and heritage. Highlights on the field included the presence of BMW’s rare “Batmobiles” racing coupes, which included Alexander Calder’s famed 1975 Le Mans 3.0 CSL, 1975 Sebring 12 Hour and 1976 Daytona 24 Hour winners. The rarely seen Maserati 450S Le Mans “Costin Coupe,” which Sir Stirling Moss raced at Le Mans in 1957 also graced the field, while Chrysler’s La Comtesse Concept Car was introduced to the public after an extensive restoration by the Chrysler group. In addition, attendees were entertained by the exceptional Packard concept car collection of Ralph and Adeline Marano of Westfield, New Jersey, rare beach cars, and Zagato-bodied masterpieces.

The 2014 Concours celebrated Maserati’s 100th Anniversary with an array of models, including the 2014 Ghibli, representing the World Champion Italian grand marque’s impressive heritage and future of the brand. McLaren also marked its 50th anniversary with a display of rare and significant racers from five decades of competition that included 2014 Honoree Jochen Mass’ 1977 McLaren M23 Formula 1 racer as part of the “Cars of Jochen Mass” class. Mass was honored on the 25th anniversary of his victory in the 24 Hours of LeMans.

Some of the world’s most prominent manufacturers had displays at the event, including Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Ferrari, Jaguar and Chrysler. Lamborghini held the North American debut of the company’s newest super sports car, the Hurácan LP 610-4, on the Concours’ field, following the vehicle’s global debut at the Geneva Motor Show this week and Infiniti chose to celebrate the Amelia Island Concours by wrapping a 2014 Infiniti Q60 Convertible in the same color scheme as Bobby Unser’s 1968 Indianapolis 500 winning racecar. The convertible was on display next to the original Indy winning car, courtesy of Infiniti and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.

Enthusiasts also enjoyed two impressive seminars this year, a tradition that has become one of the hallmarks of the Amelia Island Concours. “The Great Offy Drivers” seminar included such racing legends as Parnelli Jones, Sonny Meyer, Al and Bobby Unser and David Hobbs. Speakers Ray Evernham, David Piper, John Mecom, Bobby Rahal, Alwin Springer and Bob Tullius lead a lively discussion during the “Merchants of Speed” seminar, which gave a first person look at on-track race management and the sharp-edged business of racing.

Also displayed in a unique Hasselblad Automotive Photography Exhibit were a collection of classic motorsport photographs made with the internationally famous Hasselblad camera. The historic Hasselblad photos captured moments from the National and World Championship motorsport in the United States from the 1960s through 1979, taken by Bill Warner, with his Hasselblads.

The 20th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance will be held March 13-15, 2015 on the 10th and 18th fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The show’s Foundation has donated over $2.25 million to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Inc. and other charities on Florida’s First Coast since its inception in 1996. In 2013, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance won Octane Magazine’s EFG International Historic Motoring Event of the Year award.

Images for Amelia’s 2014 Concours

Images for Amelia's 2014 ConcoursThe Concours d’Elegance of Amelia Island has become less than a family outing, and more like a trip to Disney World with tickets at the gate running $80.00 for adults and $40.00 for students; a family of four would spend $240.00 just to get in the gate, but if you are a car enthusiast it is worth the cash… and plenty of that cash benefits charities like Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. Community Hospice cares for hundreds of terminally ill children and adults in North Florida each year regardless of their ability to pay.

Here is a slideshow of some of our favorite automobiles and motorcycles:

The 20th annual event is scheduled to be held on March 13-15, 2015.

Infiniti Sponsors Media Center at Concours Once Again

Infiniti Sponsors Media Center at Concours Once AgainPhoto Credit Infiniti

Franklin, TNInfiniti will support the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance by sponsoring the Media Center at the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island March 7-9, 2014.

Infiniti’s impressive Pavilion Display will share space at The Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach as more than 300 vintage, classic and historic racing vehicles spread out across the golf course’s 10th and 18th fairways including special classes of show cars highlighting the 50th anniversary of McLaren Racing, the sports racing cars of Jochen Mass and special Offenhauser-powered race cars.

In conjunction with the recognition of Offenhauser-powered cars at this year’s show, Infiniti worked with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum to bring Bobby Unser’s 1968 Indy 500 race winning car to the concours. Infiniti also recruited its design team, headed by worldwide Design Director Alfonso Albaisa, to commission a one-off vehicle wrap for the Q60 Convertible special-guest Bobby Unser will be driving throughout the weekend that matches his winning race car. Reminiscent of the Rislone livery found on Unser’s Offenhauser-powered Eagle, the special wrap features a striking red, yellow, black and white design finished with the number three found on the winning car. When not in use, the specially designed Q60 will be displayed near the Infiniti Pavilion Display next to the 1968 Indy 500 winning race car.

In addition to this special Q60 Convertible, the Infiniti Pavilion will also showcase a selection of Infiniti vehicles including the 2014 Q70 luxury performance sedan, QX60 7-passenger luxury crossover, QX70 performance crossover, QX80 full-size luxury SUV and the new Q50 luxury sport sedan. Since going on sale last summer, the Q50 continues to be one of the leading options in the competitive premium sport sedan segment, incorporating class-leading, world-first technologies such as Direct Adaptive Steering and Active Lane Control.

“We’re incredibly excited to once again show our support for the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance this year,” said Infiniti Vice President Michael Bartsch. “Yet again, with Bill Warner at the helm, the concours assembled a top selection of significant cars from all around the world. These cars are representative of the same passion and performance we try to incorporate into each of our passenger vehicles. The event continues to inspire fans new and old and we are proud to play a small part in it.”

Credentialed Amelia Island Concours media are invited to visit the Infiniti Media Center inside the Ritz-Carlton from March 7-8. On March 9, the media center will be moved to the Golf Club of Amelia Island Clubhouse, adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton. Concours attendees are welcome to visit the Pavilion display throughout the 2014 Amelia Island Concours, March 7-9, 2014.

Luna Olive Wood Luxury Camera Crossing RM Auction Block

Luna Olive Wood Luxury Camera Crossing RM Auction BlockThe “Ultimate Machine” is not always an automobile.

A collection of classic motorsport photographs made with the internationally famous Hasselblad camera will comprise a special exhibit at the 19th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

The special Hasselblad photos are moments from National and World Championship motorsport in the United States from the 1960s through 1979, taken by Concours Founder and Chairman Bill Warner with his Hasselblad, during his tenure as staff photographer for Road & Track Magazine from 1970 to the present.

“Hasselblad is simply the ultimate camera,” said Warner. “It’s the Mercedes-Benz, the Porsche and the Ferrari of cameras all in one. Hasselblad is not an orthodox choice for motorsport photography. That’s because most professional photographers are concerned about getting the action of motorsport, not the art. Hasselblad captures both the action and the art.”

Perhaps it was inevitable that Hasselblad’s exquisite image reproduction and legendary quality would find a home in motorsport photography.

“Hasselblad introduced their first camera, the 1600F, the same week that Watkins Glen hosted their first Grand Prix, America’s first post-war road race, in 1948; the same year Porsche built their first sports car,” said Warner. “That’s some coincidence. My most memorable shots have one thing in common: they were all made with a Hasselblad.”

The Hasselblad was the first camera to offer a large 6X6 cm (2 3/8 inches) negative with interchangeable lenses and viewfinders. In the 1960s, the Hasselblad became the camera of choice for NASA and, in 1969, was the first camera on the moon.

Through the generosity of Hasselblad, a Lunar Olive Wood Luxury Camera, one of just 200 produced, will cross the RM Auction block to benefit Spina Bifida of Jacksonville on Saturday, March 8 at 11:00 a.m. This special, limited edition Hasselblad can be viewed at the RM Auction Sale Preview at the Ritz-Carlton Oceanfront Lawn from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 7.

English Privateer Coming to Amelia Concours

lucien-bianchi-and-david-piperPictured: Lucien Bianchi and David Piper (right) shared this Ferrari GTO at Daytona

Famous English privateer David Piper will join the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Merchants of Speed Seminar on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the Talbot Ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island.

Piper graciously agreed to join the seminar panel after McLaren’s Tyler Alexander fell ill in February, just after the Merchants of Speed Seminar’s panel was announced.

David Piper brings a unique perspective to the Merchants of Speed Seminar as the only privateer entrant on the panel. His “BP Green” Ferraris and Porsches were a staple of World Championship Endurance racing in the 1960s and 1970s.

Piper’s business skills were equal, if not superior, to his on-track talents, as he ran his motorsport “hobby” as a successful business since his first major victory in the Leinster Trophy in Ireland in 1955.

While he has logged a pair of World Championship Formula 1 starts and competed with noted success in the 1960 Tasman Series for Formula 1 cars, he is best known for his exploits and successes in long distance sports car endurance racing with his Ferrari GTO, 365P2, 250LM and Porsche 917. Winner of the Paris 1000 Km at Montlhery and the Angola Grand Prix, Piper is also known as the six-time winner of the Kyalami 9-Hours. His lengthy resume touches motorsport success on nearly every continent.

In 1969, he joined Scuderia Ferrari for World Championship races in a 312P. In 1970, Piper lost a portion of his leg in an accident while filming Steve McQueen’s feature film Le Mans.

Piper continues to compete in major international historic events with his BP Green, also known as “Piper Green,” Porsche 917K. He is a fixture at Le Mans Classic and British vintage and historic race weekends.

Piper remains one of those extraordinarily rare racers who have been able to mix business with pleasure successfully.

General Lyon’s Duesenberg Comes Comes to The Amelia

General Lyon's Duesenberg Comes Comes to The Amelia Duesenberg’s name remains as potent today as it was when the powerful Indianapolis-built luxury cars ruled America’s highways and speedways during the twenties and thirties.

From the first Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 1996, Duesenbergs have won the Best of Show award four times. In 2011 Duesenberg became the only marque to win both Amelia’s Concours de Sport and Concours d’Elegance Best of Show awards in the same year.

“Duesenberg is the American classic many people come to Amelia to see,” said Bill Warner, Founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “This year we have a real treat by Duesenberg’s most famous and prolific coachbuilder, Murphy of Pasadena.”

duesenbeg-classicThe aluminum-bodied 1930 Duesenberg Model J Speedster from the William Lyon Family collection in California wears Murphy’s signature disappearing convertible top. The design not only gave the big roadster a clean profile but allows unobstructed conversation with the passenger in the solo rumble seat. It is one of just five “short wheelbase” Model J roadsters configured in Murphy’s imaginative and graceful disappearing convertible top design.

“It was Murphy’s custom to render each design full scale on a huge blackboard to ensure the car’s dimensions could be appreciated and that the proportions were pleasing and proper,” said Warner.

The Lyon’s 1930 Model J roadster called the “disappearing top torpedo convertible roadster” was owned originally by Anne Burnett, founder of the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum.

Maserati Celebrates 100th Anniversary at The AmeliaAmelia Island, FL – In celebration of Maserati’s 100th anniversary, the unique and rarely seen Maserati 450S Le Mans “Costin Coupe” will be the competition centerpiece at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

Created as a secret weapon to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1957, the 450S’s exterior design and brutish exhaust note made it the star of the French race 57 years ago. Maserati mechanics referred to it as “Il Monstro,” Italian for “the monster.”

Stirling Moss was assigned to race the V-8-powered red coupe, following his idea to create an aerodynamic coupe that would outrun the field on the Sarthe Circuit’s 3.4-mile Mulsanne Straight.

Moss suggested an aerodynamic coupe version of the potent Sebring-winning Maserati 450S sports car, asserting that such a car would offer a significant advantage on the high-speed Le Mans road circuit.

A slippery, aerodynamic body on the fastest and most powerful car in the 1957 World Sports Car Championship seemed like an idea too good to ignore, especially coming from a winning professional such as Moss.

Accordingly, Maserati commissioned Frank Costin, the English designer of the Grand Prix-winning Vanwalls and the svelte Lotus 11, to create the design. Carrozzeria Zagato, the Milano coachbuilder, worked overtime to ready the new coupe ready for the 1957 running of the world’s most famous endurance race.

Sadly, the short deadlines and a relentless calendar caused the coupe to be delivered without the full aerodynamic under-tray mandated by the designer.

Further complicating matters, no time remained for testing or development. Despite this, by the race’s second hour, Moss lashed the potent 450S coupe into second place behind the team’s 450S roadster. The one-two Maserati show didn’t last, however. By dark both red cars were parked.

Its brief racing career over, Il Monstro languished in Italy for more than a year. The factory removed the components and sat the chassis and coachwork aside. In April of 1958, American enthusiast Byron Staver convinced Maserati to convert the abandoned coupe into a very special and exotic road car.

The car was reconfigured by Maserati’s Mendardo Fantuzzi (later an independent coachbuilder) reconfigured the car, extending the wheelbase by 10 inches to accommodate its American owner. Staver kept the car until 1960.

Following several changes of ownership, Il Monstro was displayed at the Rosso Bianco Museum in Germany from 1978 through 2002. Maserati collector Alfredo Brener then acquired the car and carried out a thorough restoration.

Today, Moss’s 450S coupe remains the rarest of all Maseratis and is considered by experts and insiders to be the first true “supercar.”

Celebration of Offenhauser-Powered Vehicles at The Amelia

Celebration of Offenhauser-Powered Vehicles at The AmeliaAmelia Island, FL – A pair of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance’s popular seminars will offer “backstage passes” to the history and the business of American motorsport.

On Friday March 7, 2014 the celebration of Offenhauser-powered vehicles will begin in the Talbot Ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island at 3:00 PM with the Great Offy Drivers and David Hobbs Seminar.

Amelia’s seminars are famous for their star power. On Friday Indy 500 winners Johnny Rutherford, Parnelli Jones and Al and Bobby Unser will comprise The Great Offy Drivers Seminar. This all-star quartet is a key part of the Offy racing legend having logged five Indianapolis 500 wins and 35 National Championship victories with Offenhauser’s legendary racing engines.

They will be joined by sometimes Offy racer David Hobbs and Louis “Sonny” Meyer, Jr., son on three-time Indy winner Louis Meyer, co-founder of Meyer & Drake Engineering builders of Offenhauser racing engines after WWII. Sonny’s engines and cars won 19 Indy 500 poles and 24 500s. In 2013 he was inducted into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Hall of Fame.

Since their first Indy 500 victory in 1935, Offenhauser engines ruled the Indy 500 and the American National Championship. Offy engines powered Indy winners, Champ Cars, midgets, racing powerboats and even sports cars, winning 33 American National Racing championships across 41 seasons of competition.

“With five legends of the sport and David Hobbs, The Great Offy Drivers Seminar is an insider’s look at a storied period in American championship racing from depression-era American track racing through the end of the seventies,” said Bill Warner, Founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

The Merchants of Speed Seminar is a first person look at not just on-track race management, but the sharp-edged business of racing that rarely sees the light of day. The 10:30 AM Saturday seminar in the Ritz-Carlton’s Talbot Ballroom will be empaneled by five men who helped create the template for modern American motorsport.

Ray Evernham will explain not just the challenges of running a championship-winning NASCAR Cup team, but the complexities of creating one from the ground up.

Alwin Springer managed Porsche Motorsport North America, and has been a pivotal part of that program since the days of the mighty Porsche 917/10 and 917/30 Can-Am turbos in the 1970s.

John Mecom will discuss running Corvette’s racing program while General Motors disavowed any motorsport involvement.

Indy 500 winner and IndyCar team owner Bobby Rahal will explain the complex challenges of managing his son’s Indy Car career while running two racing teams.

Tyler Alexander will discuss the creation of McLaren Cars, the sole marque to win the Formula 1 World Championship, the Indy 500, the Can-Am Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Group 44’s Bob Tullius explains the complex and intricate mission of transforming a manufacturer’s championship-winning national club racing program into an international championship caliber professional sports car racing team.

“The Merchants of Speed will be a fast paced, 90-minute “MBA-quality” seminar about the inside business of motorsport, something that has not been offered to the public until now.” said Warner. “Both seminars will take an intimate look at motorsport and the business of motorsport from an insider’s perspective.”

Admission to each seminar is $30.00. To order tickets to either or both The Great Offy Drivers and The Merchants of Speed seminar visit www.ameliaconcours.org.
