50 Years of McLaren at 2014 Amelia Concours

50 Years of McLaren at 2014 Amelia Concours

McLaren’s 50th anniversary will be celebrated at the 19th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance on March 9, 2014, with a display of rare and significant McLaren racers from five decades of competition.

McLarens were not only victorious in the world’s richest and most prestigious races, the company changed motorsport through a relentless pursuit of perfection and brought a strictly professional approach to a sport that had been more of a glamorous hobby than a true business. Today McLaren is still the only marque to win the Formula 1™ Constructors’ Championship, the Indianapolis 500, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Can-Am Championship.

“McLaren’s racing record is without equal,” said Bill Warner, Founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “The company is about quality and excellence in every component of the car, their execution, preparation and presentation.”

To celebrate 50 years of McLaren, the Amelia Island Concours will include 2014 Honoree Jochen Mass’ 1977 McLaren M23 Formula 1 racer as part of the “Cars of Jochen Mass” class. This historic Cosworth-powered M23 took Mass to second place in the 1977 Swedish Grand Prix at the 2.497 mile Anderstorp circuit.

McLaren’s racing history includes a list of landmark victories which are a testament to the company’s groundbreaking performance. Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd. was created in 1963 by Bruce McLaren after he drove for Cooper Cars, winning the 1959 and 1960 Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship and winning the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix. Since the first McLaren raced in Formula 1, at the 1966 Grand Prix of Monaco, the team has logged over 730 Formula 1 races with 182 F1 Grand Prix victories, eight World Constructors’ titles and 12 Drivers’ Championships.

“McLaren’s unblinking quest to improve upon what many called ‘perfection’ is what made them the most successful racing team in history,” said Warner. “No one can match their successes across such a broad range of racing disciplines. Only Ferrari has won more Formula 1 titles than McLaren, but they had a 17 year head start.”

Bruce McLaren’s talent for auto sports and business paved the way for McLaren’s future success. He personally won two Can-Am titles in 1967 and 1969 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, alongside countryman Chris Amon in 1966, driving a Ford GT40. McLaren won 43 Can-Am victories between 1967 and 1974, even though Bruce passed away testing his new McLaren M8D Can-Am racer in 1970.

McLaren cars went on to secure three Indianapolis 500 victories between 1972 and 1976 and claimed victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995 with the F1. The F1 was never meant to be a racer and won Le Mans upon its debut. With this victory, McLaren became the only marque in history to claim motorsport’s famous Triple Crown – victories at the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

McLaren Automotive North America will again be a participating sponsor of the Amelia Island Concours for the third consecutive year. McLaren will host event guests at its brand display pavilion on Saturday and Sunday where several special vehicles will be shown.

Austin Kimberly Brings ‘The Amelia’ Pride to British Racing

Austin Kimberly Brings 'The Amelia' Pride to British RacingNews from the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance – Austin Kimberly raced to twin victories and the British Racing Sports Car Club’s national Formula Ford 1600 Championship at the Trac Mon road circuit in Anglesey, Wales, in September becoming the only American to win the prestigious British road racing championship for open wheel, single-seaters. It was also Kimberly’s 19th Birthday.

The three-race championship-deciding weekend format favored Kimberly’s now trademark lightning starts. The freshman engineering student at Roger Williams University (Bristol, RI) rocketed to a first lap lead of almost a second in the first race, and over 1.2 seconds in the second lap, and stayed in front until the checkered flag. The third race of the championship weekend found Austin on the podium with a championship-clinching third place finish.

On the victory podium Kimberly gave much of the credit for his remarkable record setting performances to his team, “This championship could not have happened had it not been for Cliff Dempsey [Racing] and his entire organization.”

Kimberly’s Ray Formula Ford 1600 racer carries the logo of The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and Austin was quick to thank his parents, Capt. Keith Kimberly, USN, and Lorrin Kimberly, and his grandparents, long-time Amelia Island Concours staff volunteers, Joan and Randy Kimberly, for their support.

“As a charitable foundation, we are particularly interested in supporting the ambitions and dreams of young people who wish to enter the various automotive fields,” said Bill Warner, Founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “Austin is in his freshman year of engineering studies and has taken the first big step toward his goal of becoming an engineer and racing a Chevrolet Corvette in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Everyone at ‘The Amelia’ is extraordinarily proud that he’s carrying our colors.”

Austin Kimberly Claims Victory in Kent, England

Austin Kimberly Claims Victory in Kent, England“The Amelia’s” Austin Kimberly leads British Formula Ford Racing Championship with Dominant Brands Hatch Race Victory

Amelia Island, FL – Eighteen year old Austin Kimberly carried the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance colors to victory in the tenth round of the BRSCC (British Racing Sports Car Club) Avon Tyres Formula Ford 1600 National Championship at the famed Brands Hatch circuit in Kent, England on August 6th.

It was a near perfect race weekend for the young American student and racer. He qualified his Ray GR08 Formula Ford supported by The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance on the front row of the grid and raced to second place in the ninth round of the national championship. In round ten, he won, leading 47 of the 48 laps in the weekend’s two-race national championship format.

“Race one was tough because I had pressure all race. I left the door open on the last lap and my Dempsey Racing teammate, Skyler Robinson, went up the inside going into Paddock Hill Bend,” said Kimberly. In race two Kimberly led from the start to finish winning by two seconds.

With just two races remaining in the 2013 national championship, Kimberly leads the prestigious Avon Tyres British National Formula Ford 1600 Championship. Kimberly’s next race is on August 31st at Oulton Park in England, with the season finale taking place on Saturday, September 28th in a three race series at the 2.1 mile Trac Mon Circuit in Anglesey, Wales.

“It’s very satisfying to see our logo on Austin’s racer,” said Bill Warner, Founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “His family is part of our ‘concours family’ and we’re happy that we can help him realize his dream of becoming an engineer and a champion racing driver. Fostering an interest in the automotive field in young people has always been part of ‘The Amelia’.”

Austin Kimberly is the grandson of long-time Amelia Concours d’Elegance volunteers Joan and Randy Kimberly. He is currently undergoing freshman orientation at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island.

ALFA Romeos and Cadillacs on Amelia Island

ALFA Romeos and Cadillacs on Amelia Island

More news from the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance confirms the ALFA Romeo Stradale TZ3s and a line of Cadillac Concept cars are coming to NE Florida.

Amelia Island, FL – The last of only nine custom built ALFA Romeo Stradale TZ3s will make its debut on the 18th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance field on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. Known as the Italian sports car with “the heart of a Viper and the soul of an ALFA”, this stunning automobile is sure to please car fans.

Just nine Stradale TZ3s have been constructed to celebrate the centenary of Carrozzeria Zagato in 2010. The Azzurro California hued example slated to appear at the 18th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is the final car in the exclusive series.

Indianapolis 500 racerThe Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance also announced that the supercharged, Miller 91, front drive Indianapolis 500 racer that set a speed record in 1928, will be making an appearance at this 50 year old NE Florida car show, too. Leaving its permanent home at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, the historic car be part of the Concours’ “Cars of Harry Miller” class, which will honor the work of legendary American race car designer Harry Miller.

Leon Duray was behind the wheel of the 1928 Indy 500 Pole Winner when it set a speed record of 124.018 mph during qualifying, and although he never won the race, he set a speed record that still has the experts scratching their heads 85 years later. Sadly, the Indy pole winner led the first 59 laps of the race, but retired with overheating problems. It took seven years of technological progress and a 55 per cent increase in engine size to outrun the Duray Miller’s blistering record qualifying lap.

Cadillac's 2003 "Sixteen"Cadillac’s 2003 “Sixteen” will headline the 18th annual Amelia Concours d’Elegance’s Cadillac Concept Car Class.

A decade ago, the elegant excess of Cadillac’s “Sixteen” Concept Car set off alarms throughout the global auto industry as it rolled into the North American International Auto Show.

Part of Cadillac’s “Art and Science” design theme, the Sixteen, it was widely rumored, came very close to achieving production status. One thing it did very well was to influence and flavor Cadillac’s product planning. The latest generation of Cadillacs carries the spirit of the Sixteen’s concept and execution in their design DNA.

“We wanted a super luxury flagship,” said Wayne Cherry, the retired Vice President of GM Design who led the Sixteen design project. “The Sixteen had to have a presence. We wanted it to be the ultimate expression of Cadillac; to reinstate Cadillac as a world leader in design and technology and a reminder of the heritage of Cadillac.”

The 18th Annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Cadillac Concept Class includes:

    1949 Coupe de Ville
    1952 Convertible Coupe
    1953 Le Mans Concept
    1953 Le Mans
    1953 Supercharged Eldorado
1956 Eldorado Brougham Motorama Town Car
    1958 Eldorado Biarritz
    1959 Cyclone
    1961 Eldorado
    2002 Cien
    2003 Sixteen

More Classic Cars Coming to The Amelia 2013

More Classic Cars Coming to The Amelia 2013As we approach the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, my in-box is filling up with updated information. What cars are coming, who has agreed to be a guest speaker, and information about a new, less expensive event, the Festivals of Speed, benefiting Spina Bifida of Jacksonville, for only $20.00 per ticket.

The Amelia now includes “Coffee and Cars,” on Saturday for FREE! The Festivals of Speed is Saturday for only $20.00 (though I saw a two-for-one Groupon somewhere), and of course, The Amelia takes place on Sunday with tickets going for only $75.00 each.

I don’t know what you are thinking, but apparently, NE Florida, namely Amelia Island, is the place to show off classic cars and the finer things in life!

Whether you attend one event or all of them, the money raised for Hospice of NE Florida by The Amelia, or for Spina Bifida by the Festivals of Speed, you are contributing to wonderful causes.

Here is one of the latest emails from The Amelia:

Amelia Island, FL – Edsel Ford’s “continental car”, a custom boattail speedster, will take its rightful place in the Sports Car Class of the 18th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. In the shape of Edsel’s seminal speedster is the genesis of Ford’s legendary design department.

Edsel Ford was hardly “a chip off the old block”. The acorn fell well away from the mighty oak that was Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company. Edsel was not just the President of Ford, he was a car guy to his core. His tastes and passions still resonate in the lines of Ford’s contemporary cars.

Edsel was enchanted by European sports cars. His trips to Europe, he called it “the continent”, triggered visions of Fords with “continental” styling. In 1934 what would become Ford’s in-house design department created his first “long, low and rakish continental car” (as Edsel described it to his designer and confederate E.T “Bob” Gregorie) on a ’32 Ford chassis.

His boattail speedster had Ford V-8 power and running gear wrapped in a sleek, all-aluminum boattail body made by Ford’s aircraft division. It was just what Edsel Ford wanted and had described. No running boards and a steeply raked split windshield that disguised Edsel’s continental car’s humble assembly line origins.

The Continental name stuck. Within the decade, the radical new Lincoln Continental was a stylish world class luxury contender. When the 1939 Lincoln Continental debuted, the world famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright called it “the most beautiful car in the world”. All because Edsel Ford wanted a sports car when he came home from Europe.

When Edsel’s boattail speedster was resurrected and restored more than seven decades later, the new owners, Jim and Bonnie Gombos, spent five years returning it to Edsel’s original specifications. They even painted it “gunmetal gray”, Edsel’s favorite color.

Original Miura Roadster Comes to the Amelia Concours

Lamborghini S.p.A.Amelia Island, FL – The 18th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance announced today that it will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lamborghini, the glamorous Italian supercar, during the event’s festivities March 8-10, 2013. In support, Lamborghini will bring the rare Miura Roadster from Switzerland for the celebration. The historic roadster will be joined by its contemporary, the Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster, a full class of historic Lamborghinis, as well as a surprise from Lamborghini’s new motorsports team, Squadra Corse.

Ferruccio Lamborghini was a man of the earth and was born under Taurus, the sign of the bull. So it was no surprise when he founded his own line of farm tractors that he chose the fighting bull as his emblem. He loved fast cars and owned everything from an Aston Martin to a Mercedes-Benz Gullwing and, of course, Ferraris. When he became irritated by certain traits of his personal Italian exotic, he directed his workmen to install a new clutch from one of his tractors in the car.

In 1963, Lamborghini took the next step and built his own GT car. He knew precisely the kind of buyer he needed to please: himself. “I want to make a GT car without faults. Not a technical bomb. Very normal. Very conventional. But a perfect car.” Unspoken was the goal to out-Ferrari Ferrari. His first GT, the 350 GTV, had a 3.2 liter twin overhead cam V12 engine where Ferrari had a 3-liter single cam.

Lamborghini S.p.A. 2The front engine Lamborghini 350 GTV came first, but the Lamborghini that comes to mind when the cars from Sant’Agata Bolognese are mentioned, is the Miura. Named for an especially ferocious strain of Spanish fighting bull, the Miura made its debut without bodywork at the 1965 Geneva Auto Show. The 4-liter twin-cam 12 was mounted transversely and the advanced P400 (its model number) stole the show. When it was parked in front of the Casino in Monte Carlo during the Grand Prix weekend, alarm bells sounded from Maranello to Stuttgart to Coventry.

The rare Lamborghini Miura Roadster, which will be on display at this year’s Amelia Island Concours, debuted at the 1968 Brussels auto show.

Chevrolet to Showcase Corvette at The Amelia

Chevrolet to Showcase Corvette at The Amelia
Amelia Island, FL – Chevrolet has chosen the 18th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance to showcase the seventh generation of its iconic Corvette. This year the Amelia celebrates the 50th anniversary of the fabled Corvette Sting Ray and exhibits publically the latest Corvette to wear the Stingray name.

Corvette’s 21st century Corvette Stingray debuted yesterday at the North American International Automobile Show and is faithful to its lustrous design heritage. It’s the most powerful standard Corvette model in history. With 450 horsepower and 450 pound feet of torque from its new LT1 6.2 liter Active Fuel Management small block V-8 engine, the 2014 Stingray is the fastest and most fuel efficient Corvette in history.

“The Holy Grail for developing a performance car is delivering greater performance and more power with greater fuel economy and that’s what we’ve achieved,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief designer.

The 2014 Corvette Stingray will join original Sting Rays on exhibit Friday, March 8th at “The Design Analysis of the Revolutionary Corvette Sting Ray Seminar, Presented by Chevrolet”, at 1:30 PM in the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island’s Talbot Ballroom. Tickets are $25.00. Seating is limited.

A Corvette Sting Ray poster signing with GM’s Chief of Design Ed Welburn and Corvette Sting Ray designer Peter Brock will follow the 1:30 PM seminar.

On Saturday, March 9th and Sunday March 10th the new 2014 Stingray will be on public display on the 18th fairway of the Golf Club of Amelia Island at the Ritz-Carlton. Admission Saturday is free. Sunday Concours’ admission is $55 in advance, $70 day of show.

“The 2014 Stingray has the same sort of ‘bolt of lightning’ presence that the original Sting Ray did five decades ago,” said Amelia Island Concours Founder and Chairman Bill Warner. “We’re honored and humbled that Chevrolet has chosen the Amelia to celebrate the return of the Stingray.”

Cadillac Concept Cars Starring at Amelia Concours

1953 LeMans RoadsterBelieve it or not the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is just around the corner and this year, Cadillac’s concept cars will be the star of the show!

Amelia Island, FL – There are limited production cars, there are rare cars and there are concept cars that never find their way to the showroom. A fleet of Cadillac’s rare and mythic Motorama and Detroit Auto Show Concept Cars will take to the field at the 18th Annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance on Sunday March 10, 2013.

Created under the supervision of GM’s legendary styling chief, Harley Earl, the Cadillac Concept cars of the ‘Fifties were created as the stars of GM’s Motorama shows. All are blood ancestors of the contemporary Cadillac Cien and Cadillac Sixteen Concept Cars of the 21st century. Many were created not to be driven but only to be shown and crushed. Some early cars were sold to GM executives, celebrities, or people of influence. Happily, orders to destroy these spectacular harbingers of the future were often ignored or outright disobeyed.

Unlike many show cars of the Fifties, Cadillac’s Motorama Concept Cars carried the future in their lines, options, trim and colors. The quad headlights of the 1955 Cadillac El Dorado Brougham Concept Car were GM’s first use of the four headlight format that became standard GM styling practice in 1957. The 1959 Cadillac Cyclone featured sliding doors, predating the design nexus of all minivans.

1959 CycloneNine of Cadillac’s Concept Cars will be featured in the 18th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance; the 1949 Cadillac Fleetwood Coupe De Ville prototype, two 1953 Le Mans roadsters, 1953 El Dorado Special, 1956 Eldorado Brougham Town Car, 1959 Cyclone, 1961 El Dorado Chicago Auto Show car once owned by pro golfer Walter Hagen, the 2002 Cien, and the massive, 1000-horsepower 2003 Cadillac Sixteen.

Standard of the World is not simply a Cadillac slogan or the product of some ad copywriter’s imagination,” said Amelia Concours Founder and Chairman Bill Warner. “It is an honor and a title bestowed upon Cadillac in 1909 by the Royal Automobile Club when a trio of Cadillacs won the RAC’s Dewer Trophy… the Nobel Prize of the automotive world.” The Cadillacs were driven from London to the Brooklands race track, disassembled (with their parts scattered and intermingled with other random parts) reassembled, and driven 500 trouble free miles! It was an unrivaled nternational engineering and manufacturing feat that set Cadillac on its course as an international industry leader.

“Cadillac’s dedication to precision and technological leadership has been part of their corporate DNA since the company was founded in 1902. That spirit is personified in Cadillac’s concept cars. They’re not just interesting styling exercises, they’re important for the entire automotive industry,” said Warner.
