Sinda Nichols returns to Amelia Community Theatre with The Lady with All the Answers, a play based on advice columnist Ann Landers.

This funny and touching one woman play, set in 1975 is an intimate view into the life of Eppie Lederel aka Ann Landers. Set in 1975, from late night to early morning, Eppie wrestles with writing the most important column of her career. Interacting directly with the audience, Eppie/Ann shares some of her most entertaining, controversial, and moving stories and letters in her unique and witty style. This “highly entertaining, frequently moving” and “warmhearted play” takes you on a journey both hilarious and heart breaking – a night to remember.

For the past three years Ms. Nichols has been performing the role of Emily Dickinson in “The Belle of Amherst” directed by Ron Kurtz. She has toured the show extensively in northern Florida, and in the midwest, the west coast and Ireland. Her “masterful” and “exquisitely intelligent” performance has left audiences “seduced, captivated and uplifted”. Now, director Ron Kurtz and actor Sinda Nichols have teamed up to create another inspiring theatrical production, “The Lady With All The Answers”. The debut show in January 2013 performed to a sold out audience, was followed by four sold out performances in March.

Performances are at 8 pm on January 16 and 17 at 209 Cedar Street, Fernandina Beach.

Tickets are $15 and are available at www.ameliacommunitytheatre.org or by calling 904-261-6749.

Lobby and beverage bar at Studio 209 will open at 7 pm; open seating begins at 7:30 pm.

I am My Own Wife

I am My Own WifeFernandina Little Theatre stages regional premiere of Pulitzer and Tony-Award Winner I Am My Own Wife.

How could a man, defiantly dressed in a skirt and a string of pearls, possibly survive both the brutal Nazi and Communist reigns of terror in Berlin?

That question is at the heart of the riveting Pulitzer and Tony-awarding winning solo show, I Am My Own Wife which will have its regional premiere starting November 15 at the Fernandina Little Theatre.

This is the first production of FLT’s 23rd season and the latest regional premiere at the theatre, which has staged such edgy, award-winning plays as Red, Other Desert Cities and I Have Before Me a Remarkable Document Given to Me by a Young Lady from Rwanda.

Unique and breathtaking, I Am My Own Wife focuses on the extraordinarily complex life and times of Charlotte Von Mahlsdorf, who became an almost mythic figure as the transvestite who, through turbulent decades, ran Berlin’s famous Grunderzeit Museum, still a tourist destination today. Within the museum: the last surviving Weimar cabaret in Eastern Germany, a model for the play and movie, Cabaret, which celebrated diversity despite the fearsome Communist secret police.

Like a mystery thriller, the play dramatizes the search by Pulitzer and Tony award winning playwright Doug Wright for the real Charlotte. Did she have a heart of gold, or a heart of darkness? Along the way, Wright discovers much about himself… and humanity.

“From Beach Street to Berlin, follow in the footsteps of a courageous survivor in a show that celebrates the bravery of self realization within the boundaries of social and political oppression,” notes veteran director Ron Kurtz, who has previously directed many local productions including The Glass Menagerie, Doubt and Rwanda, and is also well-known for his signature collaboration with actress Sinda Nichols including The Belle of Amherst and The Lady with All the Answers.

Kurtz adds that, “This isn’t a show you will see anywhere else in our area. It even has innovative visual and musical effects. And seldom does a play offer the opportunity to challenge both a director and actor to this degree.”

The show is performed by a sole actor, Frank O’Donnell, who plays about three dozen different roles, ranging from Charlotte and the playwright to Nazi thugs and a wannabe super-model.

“It’s not only a monumental challenge but a great privilege to tackle this award-winning script,” notes O’Donnell, who previously worked with Kurtz on Rwanda, and has appeared in other FLT productions including Other Desert Cities, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Heiress.

I Am My Own Wife will run at Fernandina Little Theatre on November 15, 18, 20, 21 and 22 at 7:30 pm and November 16 at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $16.50 for all performances except the Tuesday performance on November 18, when tickets are only $14. Tickets may be purchased in advance at The UPS Store, located in the Fernandina Beach Publix shopping center.

FLT is an intimate performance space, and patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance to guarantee seating availability. The production includes adult themes. More information on FLT is available at www.ameliaflt.org.

All the King’s Women at Amelia Musical Playhouse

All the King's Women at Amelia Musical PlayhouseAmelia Musical Playhouse is performing the Elvis Presley-themed comedy, All the King’s Women, on November 14th and 15th at 7:30pm. One doesn’t have to be an Elvis fan going in, to walk away with a deep appreciation for The King at the conclusion of this family friendly play.

Directed by Arlene Filkoff, and written by Luigi Jannuzzi, All the King’s Women is a walk down memory lane exploring the cultural impact of The King of Rock-N-Roll, Elvis Presley, through the eyes of 17 very different women, who are either enthralled or taken aback by the King’s flamboyant style.

Through a fast-paced series of five comedic short plays and three monologues, All the King’s Women takes audiences from Presley’s childhood in Tupelo, Mississippi where 11-year-old Elvis wanted a BB gun instead of a guitar, all the way to Graceland, with such stops in between as The Steve Allen Show, Andy Warhol’s studio, a Cadillac showroom, the Graceland guard and President Richard Nixon’s office. This is a touching comedy with a heart that captures the effects that fame, generosity and just being a nice guy can bring to others.

Tickets are $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for students and are available at the theatre or on the website: www.ameliamusicalplayhouse.com.

Amelia Musical Playhouse is located at 1955 Island Walkway right off 8th St in Fernandina Beach.

Amelia Community Theatre Presents Collected Stories

Amelia Community Theatre Presents Collected StoriesAmelia Community Theatre presents Collected Stories at 8 PM on November 14-15, 20-22 and at 2 PM on November 16 on its Studio 209 stage at 209 Cedar Street. This provocative drama is by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Donald Margulies. A portion of each ticket sold will be donated to Friends of the Library.

Collected Stories explores the conflicts between Ruth Steiner, a writer of some acclaim, who now draws satisfaction from teaching graduate level writing courses, and her student, Lisa Morrison, who also becomes her assistant.

Although the two characters in the play are fictional, the focus of much of the play includes Delmore Schwartz, a real person who was a highly regarded poet, one of many who rose to fame after World War II.

As Ruth and Lisa confront generational and ethnic issues, the salient point is that of intellectual property. At what point, Marguiles asks, does the protégée reach beyond beginner status to become an artist in her own right? Where is the line drawn between following advice and instruction and claiming ownership of another’s private information? When does re-telling a story, which was shared in confidence, invade the other’s privacy? The playwright’s moving and pointed words reveal both sides of the argument.

Diana Herman plays the role of Ruth, instructive and professional in the beginning of the play, but vulnerable and needy by the end. Lisa is played by Marah Lovequist, who transforms from a gifted, yet immature writing student, to an accomplished writer in her own right.

Collected Stories is directed by Marylee Long, a veteran director whose recent shows have included It’s a Wonderful Life, The Love List, and A Streetcar Named Desire.

All tickets are $15 and are available through the ACT box office, 261-6749, or at www.ameliacommunitytheatre.org. Doors will open one hour before curtain, with open seating beginning 30 minutes before curtain.

There will be a table in the lobby at each performance to leave donated books for the Friends of the Library book sales.

Sweeny Todd will be running on weekends from October 9 to November 1, 2014, at 7:30 pm, at the Amelia Musical Playhouse located at 1955 Island Walkway, in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

It is rare to find a musical thriller, and Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s have created a chilling, suspenseful, and heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous barber-ism and culinary crime. Unlike the movie version, violence is artfully suggested.

Directed by AMPs Managing Director, Jill Dillingham, and produced by Arlene Filkoff, this cutting-edge musical redefined the boundaries of musical theatre by presenting the audience with a deep, dark and mesmerizing journey into Victorian London.

The play tells the infamous tale of the unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th century London seeking revenge against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. His thirst for blood soon expands to include his unfortunate customers, and the resourceful proprietress of the pie shop downstairs soon has the people of London lining up in droves with her mysterious new meat pie recipe!

This critically acclaimed musical won 8 Tony awards including Best Musical, Best Musical Score, Best Book and offers the most challenging music written for musical theatre.
