Iowa Hawkeyes Team Huddles on Amelia Island for 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl

Iowa Hawkeyes Team Huddles on Amelia Island for 2015 TaxSlayer BowlAmelia Island, FL – Amelia Island will be hosting the Iowa Hawkeyes football team from the University of Iowa as they travel to Florida for the 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl on January 2, 2015 at Jacksonville EverBank Field. In addition to enjoying the award-winning accommodations at Omni Amelia Island Plantation, the Iowa Hawkeyes team will be practicing at Fernandina Beach High School in preparation for the game against the University of Tennessee Volunteers.

“As part of an agreement with Gator Bowl Sports, Amelia Island will be the home base for TaxSlayer Bowl teams for the next six years,” said Gil Langley, President and CEO of the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). “This is a great opportunity for us to showcase the destination to the teams and encourage additional fans to stay on island during the bowl game weekend.”

According to Langley, the CVB has been successful in promoting the destination as an ideal home base for visiting fans attending the bowl game and other events at Jacksonville EverBank Field. The new agreement will expand that effort and, as a bonus, will help local high school football players. Fernandina Beach High School is using the TaxSlayer Bowl’s facility rental fees to upgrade the football practice facilities, where the Hawkeyes will train in preparation for the game. The renovated facilities will take two years to complete and will be available to the high school’s football team.

“This is a big deal for our school,” said Ken Roland, Athletic Director of Fernandina Beach High School. “We are very excited to host the Iowa Hawkeyes. They have a great tradition of football and we are looking forward to seeing this Big 10 power in action.”

The CVB has created a special landing page, taxslayerbowlgetaway.com, for visitors to register to win a trip to the TaxSlayer Bowl, as well as view accommodation packages and weekend events.

All The News About The Jaguars That Fits,The Times-Union Prints

All The News About The Jaguars That Fits,The Times-Union Prints
The editor of the Jacksonville Times-Union’s Metro Section apparently didn’t get the memo regarding the paper’s Friday, July 25 edition as his was the only one of five sections that day that didn’t run a story on its front page about the city’s hapless pro football Jaguars along with an accompanying photograph. Even the Money section ran an almost half page article and a three column picture of a Jaguar player.

And it gets even goofier. Last Sunday, July 27, a “Second Coming” headline splashed across Page A1 screamed “THE BIG, BIG DEBUT” referring to the unveiling of the EverBank Stadium’s giant new scoreboards with almost the entire front page devoted to the 362-foot wide video screens with an article on the mayor’s budget squeaking in a few inches of space at the bottom of the page.

All of this is taking place before the team has yet to play a single game confirming my belief that the team’s ecstatic public relations guy has the one job in the organization that is secure. I can only imagine what the paper will look like once the season begins. And hold on to your hats if and when they win a game.

The paper’s never-ending, inexhaustible coverage with articles on the team’s training camp and practices, prospects for the upcoming year, player personality profiles, the new giant scoreboard, contract signings, stadium naming rights, position-by-position analysis, player misdeeds, etc. continues day-after-day, pushing the baseball pennant race, the Tour de France, Jacksonville Suns, the PGA, NASCAR, and other current sporting events deep into the recesses of the Sports Section where they reside alongside the greyhound track racing results.

Since the coverage doesn’t stop with the sports section and has spilled over into the other segments as well I can only assume that the paper’s editors are fed up with the IRS scandal, the Hamas-Israel war, the collapse of Iraq, the VA mess, the stock market’s continuing rise, the war in Afghanistan, airline crashes, American’s net worth declining, Russian aggression in Ukraine including a passenger jet shot out of the sky, a struggling US economy, the state governor’s race, and so many other pesky national, state and international events that T-U editors apparently think are a nuisance as they take valuable space and time away from the city’s professional football team that won a total of four games last year. The Times-Union spears to be the team newsletter and lead cheerleader all in one.

Don’t get me wrong. I like sports and started my career as a sports writer for the Tampa Tribune where I covered the first Miami Dolphins training camp. So if the paper wants to continue this massive coverage here’s a few story ideas the editors can chew on for other sections of their paper:
-Tips from wide receiver and repeat offender Justin Blackmon on how to decorate a jail cell to make it feel more comfortable and homey
-How to roll a perfect joint and fool the NFL’s drug testing program
-How to break your contract and word and still generate fan adoration
-How to sell worthless crap from jerseys to baseball caps for outrageous prices to a gullible fan base
-Ways to batter your wife, fiancé, girlfriend without leaving telltale marks
-How to get through three or four years of college while reading at a third grade level
-Player’s favorite DUI attorneys
-Best bars and nightclubs to watch a player get arrested
-Lists of player’s and coach’s favorite clichés
-Investment tips from 21-year-old multi millionaires
-Drunk while tailgating? Tips on how to sober up before the game
-The best rehab centers to meet pro football players
-The most lenient states in enforcing players’ child support payments
-Tips on how to plead theft, battery, and sexual assault felonies down to misdemeanors
-Selling autographs to kids for fun and profit

Oh, by the way, the stadium improvements including the new scoreboards cost $63 million with $43 million of that coming from tax payers in the form of hotel bed taxes, so if you live on Amelia Island or in any of Jacksonville’s other surrounding communities and spend the weekend in the city for a game or any other event, you are helping foot the bill for this extravagance.

Taking Theatre to Children in Nassau County Schools
Goal: Our goal is to present a 30 minute play at each of the Nassau County elementary schools.
Total Project Value: $800

Project Description
Amelia Community Theatre’s project involves taking a 30 minute play to elementary schools in Nassau County. Our greatest expense is for royalties for each performance. We have a troupe of adult actors called the Peppermint Players who perform for children and for seniors at assisted living facilities. We have traveled to preschools and elementary schools in Nassau County since 1981. However, we are not able to do this every year, due to resources. Funding would allow us to pay royalties for many more performances, thereby visiting more schools. We also need better sound equipment to use in the very large cafetoriums where we perform. We have often found that our play is the first live theatre that many of the children have ever seen. We encourage them to write and produce their own plays, using their imagination – creating their own costumes and sets. Our shows often have a gentle lesson, whether it is about recycling, tolerance, or accepting oneself. Funds will also be used for costumes, props, and set pieces. Everything we use for the play has to fit in our cars and be easily set up on the school stage.

2011 Georgia Florida Football Classic

2011 Georgia Florida Football ClassicGeorgia Bulldog and Florida Gator fans are showing their colors all around Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island. From flags on cars to banners hanging from balconies, signage and school spirit can be found everywhere.

Florida is the home team, which rotates each year as does the name of the game with the home team being the first name in the title, however for a Georgia fan like me, it is always The Georgia/Florida game.

This classic rivalry, which has been held in Jacksonville every year since 1933, except for 1994 and 1995, when the contest was held at the respective schools’ campus stadiums due to the reconstruction of the current Jacksonville Jaguars stadium, is always a great time here on Amelia Island and the surrounding areas, and everyone seems to be predicting a close game; one Amelia Island could use. Fernandina Beach becomes a sea of red and black and when the Bulldogs win those tourists will stay in town through Sunday. If they lose, they tuck their bulldog tails and head back home.

The Bulldogs lead the overall series with a 47–40–2 overall record by its reckoning, and 46–40–2 by Florida’s count. Florida has compiled an 18–3 record in the series since 1990 (Georgia winning in 1997, 2004 and 2007), following a 15–5 streak by Georgia in the 1970s and 1980s. Granted, I went to Georgia during that time frame so it is hard for me to deal with the past 20 years!

This year my beloved Bulldogs (right now) are 2.5 point underdogs, but in this game you never know what will happen.

Prior to the game there will be lots of great things to do so if you are a fan of either team you need to indulge yourself in all that Amelia Island has to offer!

-Second Amendment Outfitters lets you shoot a gun at your rival’s target and enter for a chance to win a gun.
-Amelia Liquors will have the Jose Cuervo Girls at their South Store to take your picture in front of your favorite teams logos and colors. You can also create a label to put on a bottle of Cuervo tequila to show your team spirit to all your friends, and they will be available for personal photos as well. This all takes place from 4 till 6 on Friday. Their North Store also has a wine tasting and more, so get out and enjoy our paradise.

Friday night the island is buzzing with colorful fans, but come Saturday morning they start heading to Jacksonville to tailgate at the World’s Largest Cocktail Party, leaving the island all but deserted.

I will be staying at home this year to watch this most important game in the sanctity of my own man-cave so I can scream and imbibe in a few adult beverages with family and a few friends. When I was in College I witnessed this game in person many times so I feel I deserve to do it my way now!

Many locals throw parties, the grills are fired up and near kick-off time there is a noticeable reduction in traffic and especially male shoppers out and about.

My early prediction: Georgia 30, Florida 24 in a squeaker.

Go Dawgs! Sic Em Woof Woof Woof!!!

Happy Halloween!!!
