Save Disney’s Flik and Princess Atta

Save Disney's Flik and Princess AttaHere at SearchAmelia.com we get plenty of interesting email and the following plea was submitted to us to run as an article, so, as we are all still kids at heart – of course I will run it…

Recently back in 2012, Dug and Russell have replaced Flik’s meet-&-greet spot by “It’s Tough to be a Bug!” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. And the regular character meet-&-greets for Flik have been discontinued. Flik could also be seen with Princess Atta in the Pixar Pals’ Countdown to Fun parade at Hollywood Studios, which ended on April 6th, 2013.

Now there are no character appearances of Flik and Princess Atta at Walt Disney World anywhere! So we have to save them now! I love “A Bug’s Life” and Flik and Princess Atta are my favorite characters from the movie. Many people should like it.

Since “It’s Tough to Be a Bug!” is an “A Bug’s Life” attraction in Animal Kingdom, I declare that they should have a permanent and regular character meet-&-greet spot next to the entrance of the attraction with Flik and Princess Atta. Because I do remember meeting Flik there back in December 2011, that made a lot of sense. For Flik is the host of “It’s Tough to Be a Bug!” and the Tree of Life is the home of “A Bug’s Life.”

Russell-und-DugSo to be sure that if we still want the wilderness to be explored in Animal Kingdom, we should consider moving Dug and Russell in their “Wilderness Explorers Animal Kingdom Meet Up” to the trail that leads from Africa to Asia near Bradley Falls by Discovery River. That way, the Wilderness Explorers look more like they’re in the jungles of Paradise Falls, South America.

While within that, we shall transform the character spot at “It’s Tough to be a Bug!” where the Fastpass machines used to be, into a total and complete “Bug’s Life” character meet-&-greet called “It’s a Bug’s Life in Paradise” where Flik will continue to meet and greet with Princess Atta permanently on a daily basis.

New character arrangements for Disney’s Animal Kingdom that are bound to happen shortly. So let’s sign, support, and bring Flik and Princess Atta back to Walt Disney World forever.

National Weatherman’s Day is February 5th

National Weatherman's Day is February 5thConsidering what a winter we have had in weather, I thought it would be interesting to note that National Weatherman’s Day, always on February 5th, honors weathermen and women who work hard to accurately predict the weather.

Despite major technological advances and supercomputers, forecasting the weather is about as accurate as that of a Pennsylvania rodent. But, even a good guess is important in several ways.

We need to know how to dress the kids for school, whether or not we need an umbrella, should we make more time available for our commute, how to pack for a vacation or trip and so much more.

Knowing what to expect from our weather can even save lives from dangerous developing weather systems such as blizzares, hurricanes, wildfires and tornados.

Weatherman’s Day apparently honors the birth of John Jeffries, one of America’s first weather observers. Jeffries was born on Feb 5, 1744 and began keeping weather records in 1774 until 1816.

Best Watches Sold by Telegraph Operators

Best Watches Sold by Telegraph OperatorsHere is a pleasant read, I received from my mother, for your Sunday pleaure:

If you were in the market for a watch in 1880, would you know where to get one? You would go to a store, right? Well, of course you could do that, but if you wanted one that was cheaper and a bit better than most of the store watches, you went to the train station! Sound a bit funny? Well, for about 500 towns across the northern United States, that’s where the best watches were found.

Why were the best watches found at the train station? The railroad company wasn’t selling the watches, not at all The telegraph operator was. Most of the time the telegraph operator was located in the railroad station because the telegraph lines followed the railroad tracks from town to town. It was usually the shortest distance and the right-of-ways had already been secured for the rail line.

Most of the station agents were also skilled telegraph operators and that was the primary way that they communicated with the railroad. They would know when trains left the previous station and when they were due at their next station. And it was the telegraph operator who had the watches. As a matter of fact they sold more of them than almost all the stores combined for a period of about 9 years.

This was all arranged by “Richard”, who was a telegraph operator himself. He was on duty in the North Redwood, Minnesota train station one day when a load of watches arrived from the East. It was a huge crate of pocket watches. No one ever came to claim them.

So Richard sent a telegram to the manufacturer and asked them what they wanted to do with the watches. The manufacturer didn’t want to pay the freight back, so they wired Richard to see if he could sell them. So Richard did. He sent a wire to every agent in the system asking them if they wanted a cheap, but good, pocket watch. He sold the entire case in less than two days and at a handsome profit.

That started it all. He ordered more watches from the watch company and encouraged the telegraph operators to set up a display case in the station offering high quality watches for a cheap price to all the travelers. It worked! It didn’t take long for the word to spread and, before long, people other than travelers came to the train station to buy watches.

Richard became so busy that he had to hire a professional watch maker to help him with the orders. That was Alvah.

The rest is history as they say.

The business took off and soon expanded to many other lines of dry goods.

Richard and Alvah left the train station and moved their company to Chicago, and it’s still there.

YES, IT’S A LITTLE KNOWN FACT that for a while in the 1880’s, the biggest watch retailer in the country was at the train station. It all started with a telegraph operator: Richard Sears and his partner Alvah Roebuck!

I’m not sure how accurate this account is, but Sears From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia appears to support this story.

International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day

International Dog Biscuit Appreciation DayCan you believe it? There really is an International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day, and it is always held on February 23rd. Because I manage the farmers’ market in historic Fernandina Beach on Saturday mornings, I was absolutely thrilled to learn about this unusual celebration, especially since we have a dog treat vendor at the Market Place on N. 7th Street.

This is a day to celebrate man’s best friend. Unlike a day that was “going to the dogs,” this is a a day to appreciate the true value of rewarding your dog… with a dog biscuit of course.

“Every dog has his day,” so they say, and this is definately their day!

If you are a dog lover, you understand unconditional love. Rewarding your dog’s behavior, or rewarding them for accomplishing a trick with a special canine tidbit is a common way to say, “Thank you” to your dog in a manner they understand.

Take a moment today and celebrate with other dog lovers around the world by treating your four-legged companion to a few dog biscuits!

February 10th is Umbrella Day

February 10th is Umbrella DayFebruary 10, 2013 is Umbrella Day, but it should be on Tuesday or Wednesday because that is when the rains are supposed to move in.

Umbrella Day is in recognition of the invention of the umbrella, something most of us are glad we have.

Umbrellas not only keep the rain, sun and snow off of our faces, but you can use one for advertising, or even to block the wind. They can be large enough to share or small enough to fit in the glove box of your car or truck.

Of course, in Fernandina Beach, you will often see large umbrellas on the beaches, too.

So, dig out your favorite umbrella and celebrate!

Groundhog Day and Candlemas

Groundhog Day and CandlemasIt is February 2, 2013 and that means it is Groundhog Day, a celebration of a little rodent who lives in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

The tradition holds when Punxsutawney Phil awakens on this day, if his sees his shadow on a sunny morning, there will be six more weeks of winter. Then the vermin heads back underground until winter is over.

However, if Phil doesn’t see his shadow, spring will be early and everyone lives happily ever after… or something like that.

This tale of yore actually migrated to America with German immigrants who settled in the hills of Pennsylvania, and is lightly based upon Candlemas, also celebrated on February 2nd, the day in the middle of winter and spring.

A famous Candlemas poems goes:

If Candlemas be fair and bright,
    Winter has another flight.
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
    Winter will not come again.

Speaking of Candlemas…

Candlemas, The Feast of Purification

Candlemas marks the end of the Christmas season. Candlemas is a celebration of the Feast of Purification of the Virgin Mary.

According to Jewish customs, women were considered “unclean” after the birth of a child. The unclean period lasted 40 days after the birth of a son, and 60 days after the birth of a daughter. During this period, they were not allowed into the temple to worship. At the end of this time, the woman was brought to the temple and “purified” in a ceremony.

After the birth of Christ, the Virgin Mary was purified on Candlemas or the Feast of Purification.

On Candlemas, candles used during the year are blessed. In Christian churches, candles represent Jesus Christ as the light, the truth and the way.

Ally’s Truck is for Sale

Ally's Truck is for SaleTruck for sale! That’s right, I have put my truck up for sale.

My 1998 Dodge Dakota is fun to drive with a 5-speed manual transmission. It has working air conditioning and two new front tires my parents gave me for my birthday.

The truck is certainly recognizable with its orange and yellow flaming paint job, over a metallic blue base coat. But, if you are a Gator fan, you will LOVE the coloring of this truck! Not only did my truck make the Top 15 List of cool cars in last year’s high school year book, but I NEVER have trouble locating it in a parking lot… ever!

There is a Tanneau cover installed, as well as an after market stereo I bought, and since my parents hardly ever let me go anywhere, the truck only has 118,382 miles.

I bought the truck two years ago, before I even had a drivers license, with money I had earned babysitting and I have been cruising all over East Nassau County in this cute little pick-em-up-truck for a year and a half.

My parents say this is an ideal first vehicle for a teenager. Mom and Dad were thrilled that I learned how to drive a stick and they say someday I’ll be glad I have that skill. And you can only imagine their happiness when they realized it is next to impossible to text and drive in Fernandina Beach if you drive a clutch! They never let me remove the Tanneau cover either, they said it would keep all of my high school friends from jumping into the bed of the truck for a ride home from school or to the beach.

truck-for-sale-fernandinaI think they just liked having a truck in the family when they needed to have something hauled home from Sears, Home Depot or Lowe’s.

This year I am a senior at FBHS and I’m in the CNA program. Since I have been already been accepted to several colleges, I decided I needed something more practical to haul my stuff to and from school next year and I found a deal on a vehicle that I could not pass up!

So, now, I am ready to part with my very first car. And my folks say, “Everyone remembers their first car!”

I have it priced at $2,000 (including a brand new, NEVER been used ice scraper and snow brush set and the black fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror), though when I looked it up on Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com) the private sale value was higher. All reasonable offers are welcomed as well as any donations you would like to make to my college fund!

Please call my dad, Lawrence Mackie, at (904) 583-1010 and leave a message for more information or to test drive this amazing vehicle.

Illuminati, Freemasonry and the Big Brother New World Order

Illuminati, Freemasonry and the Big Brother New World OrderApparently, I have been living under a rock! Recently, while listening to the words of a rap song (because I have children and want to know what they are listening to), I learned about the existance of self-proclaimed rulers of the world, The Illuminati, and their secret membership and pledge of obediance that has been controlling world events since 1776.

If you listen more closely to the music your kids are funneling into their minds with headphones, these Illuminati inspired artists and the tactics they use to share their message with our children just may frighten you.

According to NaijaGists.com some of today’s most popular entertainers such as Chris Brown, Angelina Jolie, Kanye West and Jim Carey, role models for our children, are using Illuminati symbolism to further their movement.

Since this is a secret society, I wonder where they obtained the names of those celebrities suspected of being Illuminati?

Illuminati Symbolism
The all-seeing “eye” in the pyramid (yep, the one on our dollar bill); the pinky, thumb and pointer finger salutation; the pentagram, and the image of an owl are all around us every single day. It is when I began to notice how these symbols are repeatedly flaunted in front of us, I wondered, “Is there something more sinister at work in the world, something evil accompanying these symbols?”

Those under the influence of The Illuminati are not necessarily Satin worshippers, but more so, they sold their souls to evil in exchange for fortune and fame. They don’t really believe in “God”. They believe they are entitled “Gods”. They intend to take over the world, influencing those in power and those who hold a degree of control over large groups of people. Those in government and entertainment are a natural fit for the Illuminati’s mission: to take over the entire world and torture and murder Christians.

Some conspiracy theories include perhaps John F. Kennedy’s assassination was allegedly orchestrated by the Illuminati and possibly Michael Jackson’s death, too, rumored he either would not join, or tried to separate himself from the cult. Whitney Houston supposedly turned against The Illuminati before her untimely death.

Freemasonry and the Illuminati
Conspiracy theorists have tried to make a connection between Illuminati, the New World Order (seeking a one world government) and the Freemasonry, also a society with secrets that has been in existance for hundreds of years. Freemasonry candidates must declare belief in a Supreme Being (without declaring which one), and discussing politics or religion is forbiddon within a Masonic Lodge or Temple.

The highest level of Mason is called a Mastor Mason, the Third Degree. Watch just a few minutes of the following Discovery/History channel episode and judge for yourself:

Cady Studios Senior Picture Promo Shot

Image found at CadyStudios.com

Current Events
Think about those making tons of money and then ask yourself, “Why?” I always thought some folks were just luckier than others. Maybe not?

Cady Studios for example makes a fortune taking images of our children for school pictures. My daughter’s senior pictures this year were ridiculously expensive, but I have no option other than buy their overpriced package (a future SearchAmelia article) or do without. The picture, shown here on the right, is from their online brochure… could this image be viewed as Illuminati symbolism?

Read this article about Lady Gaga. She is so talented it appears unnatural, but her use of symbolism is practically unquestionable.

Sasha Fierce

Sasha Fierce, image found at Beyonce.com

Beyonce A/K/A Sasha Fierce
Beyonce has taken on an alter-ego, Sasha Fierce, pehaps since joining The Illuminati? (Because I am a parent, I won’t touch the rumors surrounding the meaning behind the name of her daughter, Blue Ivy.)

Kanye West is outspoken about how he has sold out for fame. Take a look at the following video. At the 2 minute mark, listen close, not only does he admit selling his soul to the devil, but he takes a post mortum jab at Michael Jackson. Is this the jargon you really want your kids listening to? Then Parents, it is time to wake up and smell the coffee – because they are listening to Kanye, Lady Ga Ga and the rest of the Illuminati!

Caution – Explicit Lyrics

The song that originally brought my attention to The Illuminati Conspiracy Theory was Mercy, by Kanye West. In the chorus he includes ancient words much like those found in Mathew 8:12, “It is a weeping, and a moaning, and a gnashing of teeth”.

Mathew 8-11:12
(11) I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. (12) But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

The Rise Against the Machine
Then, there are artists rising up against the Illuminati, warning us of those in power.

Illuminati, by Korn
“They’re taking over now
Eating up our souls somehow
Taking over now
Parasites, they run around
The culprits won’t be found
They lie behind this mask of wealth
They’re taking over now
Illuminati they hide”

Sag my Pants, by Hopsin
“I’m just an idiotic, ironic, symbolic, Illuminati product
That’s gonna be killed if I talk about it (shhh)
This industry business is all screwed up
I have no favorite rappers because all you suck!”

Whether you think a secret society is trying to rule the world with the help of evil spirits or not, it is important that as parents, we know what messages are being given to our kids via today’s music, video and other media outlets.

Happy Parenting!

CDC Offers Zombie Attack Survival Guide

CDC Offers Zombie Attack Survival Guide

Image found on CDC website

When I heard that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) developed a pamphlet telling us how to prepare for a Zombie attack, my first thought was, “What a waste of government money!”

After looking at the Zombie Survival Guide, I realized this is pure marketing genius! What better way to get the entire family involved in emergency preparedness.

With hurricane season approaching, and the Second Coming of Christ expected on May 21st, maybe we should be prepared for a Zombie Attack, using their Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse guide!

The brochure offers excellent advice such as, “Plan your evacuation route. When zombies are hungry they won’t stop until they get food (i.e., brains), which means you need to get out of town fast! Plan where you would go and multiple routes you would take ahead of time so that the flesh eaters don’t have a chance! This is also helpful when natural disasters strike and you have to take shelter fast.”

Dead Birds, Dead Fish and Hazmat Suits

Dead Birds, Dead Fish and Hazmat SuitsAll over the news both online and on television were stories about the thousands of birds that fell from the sky over Beebe, Arkansas late New Year’s Eve.

Described by many as a scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, the community is looking for answers. Dead are mostly red-winged black birds and authorities are speculating the deaths may be related to lightning, stress, hail or fireworks. Really? Then why are officials from the Department of Environmental Services who are picking the birds off of lawns, roofs and streets wearing protective gloves, oxygen masks and hazmat suits?

Take a look at some of these reports for yourself:

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooZxZhpMSl0

Here is the official press release from Arkansas’s Game and Fish Commission, released January 1, 2011, regarding the dead birds.

BEEBE – Last night, ringing in the New Year took on a whole different meaning for the citizens of Beebe. Beginning at around 11:30 p.m., enforcement officers with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission began getting reports of dead black birds falling from the sky in the city limits of Beebe.

Officers estimated that over 1,000 birds had fallen out of the sky over the city before midnight. Most of the birds were dead, but some were still alive when officers arrived. The blackbirds fell over a one-mile area in the city. AGFC wildlife officer Robby King responded to the reports and found hundreds of birds.

“Shortly after I arrived there were still birds falling from the sky,” King said. King collected about 65 dead birds that will be sent to the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission lab and the National Wildlife Health Center lab in Madison, Wis.

The AGFC has flown over the area to gauge the scope of the event. There were no other birds found outside of the initial area.

AGFC ornithologist Karen Rowe said that strange events similar to this one have occurred a number of times across the globe. “Test results usually were inconclusive, but the birds showed physical trauma and that the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail,” Rowe said.

Another scenario may have been that New Year’s Eve revelers shooting off fireworks in the area may have startled the birds from their roost. The birds may have died from stress.

Rowe said that it didn’t appear as though the birds died of any poisoning or other event. “Since it only involved a flock of blackbirds and only involved them falling out of the sky it is unlikely they were poisoned, but a necropsy is the only way to determine if the birds died from trauma or toxin,” she said. Testing will begin on Monday.

The City of Beebe has hired U.S. Environmental Services to begin the cleanup and dispose of the dead birds. The environmental firm will go door-to-door to pick up the birds that are still in yards and on roof tops.

Mid Air Collision

MSNBC has recently revealed the cause of death may have been a mid-air collision among the birds.

But wait… there’s more

24 Hours Later

Twenty four hours later and 125 miles away, hundreds of thousands of Drum fish were found dead in the Arkansas River.

What do you think?

Could these incidents have been caused by government testing as many commenting on a wide variety of articles on this topic are suspecting? Or is something else at play here? Let us know what you think!

More Worthless Holidays

More Worthless Holidays

More Worthless Holidays

March 14th is a day of unusual celebrations such as Butterflies Day, Potato Chip Day and National Pi Day. I wasn’t going to event write about these three strange celebrations, but we had so much fun discussing it at dinner, that I had to let others share in the strange fun-ness of it all!

Butterflies Day – Butterflies are cool and everyone likes them. Kids like to watch them and they are easy to catch. March brings us spring and this means we can enjoy more outside activities and in turn, see more butterflies. If you are looking for something to do today, why not pick up a book or go on line and research a bit about butterflies? Then you can go outside and try to identify them.

National Potato Chip Day – Always held on March 14th this one makes you ask, “Are you kidding me?” Well, no we are not kidding you. Apparently, potato chips are America’s favorite snack and it is the potato of choice for a side dish with a meal, at parties and especially when watching sports.

Potato chips come in many flavors and they are oh-so-bad for you when it comes to healthy eating and nutrition. First invented in 1853, potato chips have been popular ever since. So, something to do to celebrate this odd occasion would be to stay at home, become a couch potato and indulge in this salty and often greasy snack. Mmmm – I can hear my arteries hardening as I think about them!

National Pi Day – Also always held on March 14th celebrates Pi, a mathematical concept and a number that never ends… so we just round it off to 3.14. Maybe that is why 03/14 is National Pi Day?

It is also the birthday of Albert Einstein. Einstein, a physicist, was born on March 14, 1879, though Pi was born before Mr. Einstein.

Girl Scout Day

Girl Scout Day

Girl Scout Day

We recently covered the history of the Boy Scouts and it is only fitting that we give you some history to this March 12 holiday, Girl Scout Day.

Celebrating the Girls Scouts of America, this holiday marks the date Juliette Gordon Low registered the organization’s first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia, creating the first official Girl Scout troop on March 12, 1912.

Their wildly popular selling of Girl Scout Cookies as an annual fund raising event supports many of the girl’s scouting activities. The Girl Scouts is an organization that teaches girls and young women values such as honesty, fairness, courage, compassion and citizenship through activities and to build self-esteem. The girls and their achievements are recognized by a variety of special awards and patches.

Also known to many as Girl Scout Week, this holiday for girls always includes March 12!

Telephone Patent Granted

It was on March 7th, in 1876, that the telephone patent was granted to Alexander Graham Bell. Bell’s mother and his wife were deaf, and this influenced Bell’s life’s research on hearing and speech. These experiments resulted in his being awarded the first U.S. patent for the telephone in 1876.

Now we have cell phones, wireless phones, computer phones and satellite phones, what will they think of next?

Try Religion on Holy Experiment Day

Try Religion on Holy Experiment Day

Try Religion on Holy Experiment Day

Jeremiah 17:7 “But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.”

As we stumble through life’s path it is easy to feel you have strayed from the direction you meant to be heading and often we feel we have chosen the wrong path. When you find yourself misguided, you may think of conducting a holy experiment.

Well, March 4th is your day to try something religious, but use caution. When Nadab and Abihu toyed with God in Numbers 3:4, they were struck dead!

Holy Experiment Day is always on March 4th and here are a few ideas I found on the website, Holiday Insights.

Pray for someone to get better
Pray someone will ask you on a date
Try saying grace at dinner and see if others join you
Try to get a person to attend religious services
Plan to convert someone to your religion

I couldn’t find out who invented this Holy Experiment Day, my guess is it was invented by a contemporary Pastor as a way to encourage more people to take religion for a test drive. (Yes, I was listening when Pastor Darryl spoke of Cultural Christianity on Sunday.)

Go ahead and kick a few tires, this is your conversation, so pray for anything you feel is appropriate, you may find God is the perfect vehicle for you!

Dr. Seuss Birthday

Dr. Seuss's Birthday

Dr. Seuss's Birthday

Dr. Seuss was born on March 2nd in 1904 and wrote many of our favorite childhood books. From East Beach Beasts to a goat on a boat, his lively characters and sing-song poetry captured our attention for hours on end.

Born Theodor Geisel, some of Dr. Seuss’ books are considered controversial or of a political nature such as Horton Hears a Who! Whose moral of the story is “A person is a person, no matter how small,” making many believe this Dr. Seuss’ simple, yet profound statement is about abortion.

Inspired by the birthday of Dr. Seuss, Read Across America also kicks off on March 2nd. The National Education Association calls for every child to be reading in the company of a caring adult on this day. If you want to celebrate Read Across America Day as well as Same Stuff Day, maybe reading to a child would be the perfect solution.
