How can increased austerity in US policy work for anyone but the top 5% (in the short run)? Isn’t it true, that ultimately putting people back to work requires increased dollars and some creative planning? or, would you prefer the status quo?

Dear Achoubeach. Rather then quickly offering some effective ways to restructure city government, I,m of the opinion that this issue deserves a full fledged essay, a thought additionally supported by the fact that disenchantment with the voting process and city politics as shown by miserable voter election turn outs. It would be too easy to state that anyone seeking to be elected for political office on any level is purely driven by sociopathic tendencies – a frightening reality we are currently witnessing in the US and across the globe – but if we want to protect the last vestiges of democratic principles, our small Fernandina Beach Village could be a shining example of vox populis decision making. Be on the look out for that essay.

a question for Searchamelia’s estemed publisher. How would Fernandina Beach drop a commission form of gov’t for the more effective City Mgr and Mayor structure? The commission is an extremely expensive and wasteful Parliament of fools.

It is amazing how quickly we seem to forget….it was only January when the previous City Manager manipulated 2 new commissioners into letting him resign instead of being fired, at a much high cost to this city….at the subsequent meetings the new Commissioners were manipulated to agree that who ever the interim City Manager would be could not apply for the job, because everyone knew at that time the interim would be Joe Garrity. When the new City Manager would be hired a supermajority would be required, so that Joe Garrity could not have that job either. Seems like an awful lot of bias against one person doesn’t it? Now we got rid of the super majority, the interim City Manager is a candidate for the finalist position, even though he assured the commission when interviewed he did not want the job full time.

As for ICMA, it is an organization for members, run by members for members……and we all know that any organization that’s sole purpose is to promote itself and its members is not the most unbiased group to have a hand in the middle of things.

Hi Han,

I hope all is well with all of your projects. I am well. I spent last week helping film the World Poker Tour in Hollywood, FL. and this week in Jacksonville). The great news is that while down south I created an opportunity to go out to the Seminole Indian reservation and interview the two sons of the only woman Chief (Chairman), of the Seminole along well as the current Chairman. This is very exciting since it has taken several years to gain their trust.
I want to do a documentary and possibly a feature, on the life of Bettymae Jumper. She is legendary in her tribe for having escaped death at the hands of her own uncles while only a small child because, during those times, tribal members wanted no mixing with the Wasicu (whites). With a pure blood Seminole mother and a white trapper for a father, there was no tolerance for Bettymae, a mixed blood. Her life after that is amazing.
The reason I am letting you know this is because I am wondering if there is any possibility that we could borrow your high def camera for these couple of days (picking it up on Wed. (May 2), and returning it on Saturday May 5. I want you to know that I completely understand if you would rather not loan it for any reason.

I find the terminology of good old boy politics quite interesting considering that the have not really been “good old boys” on this commission or running this city for several years. As for the real good old boys, I will say this you knew what was going on, and what the rules were, all these transplants…hidden agendas…money money money…..more money.
Who cares that our two retirement funds are 20 million in the whole, lets build a park.

my cousin does so much good for Amelia Island I hoop the officials will let him stay in our country, he deserves it. Reading the Newspapers he brings in a lot of business for the local community there. I am proud of him!

Interesting analogy, but while Survivor is a highly rated long running show, Fernandina politics can hardly drum up 20% of the audience to be interested. That’s why good old boys politics is still part of our culture.

Menu service was also available. I ordered from the menu and never had the buffet, though I heard it was good. I was hoping they would do a Bike Night on the island. That would have been fun!

What’s going on? All hotels, resorts and inns are reporting great occupancies, yet restaurants and stores are closing down left and right. Maybe they are on the wrong side of the economic cycle. Murray’s in my opinion made the mistake of serving buffet style instead of table service as they do in Yulee. BTW I love Murray’s in Yulee.
