Friday, October 17, 2014 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Amelia Island Museum of History
233 South Third Street
Fernandina Beach, FL 32034
Join the Amelia Island Museum of History as special guest Brendan Burke delivers a presentation on “Florida’s Shrimping Fleet.”

During the early 20th century, a new type of boat was born in Northeast Florida. Forged from Greek, Italian, Norwegian, African-American and native Floridian hands, the Florida-style trawler became one of the most important boats in the history of the state.

From 1919 until the mid-1980s, Florida supplied the world with shrimp trawlers and commercial fishing boats of all types. Northeast Florida was alive with the buzz of saws and the banging of hammers and the enterprise grew into a multi-billion dollar industry that contributed to over 23 foreign fishing fleets. Ultimately, Florida would be responsible for the largest purpose-built wooden fishing fleet ever assembled.

This presentation brings together stories, pictures, and the people from the halcyon days of catching shrimp and building boats in the Sunshine State. Sponsored by the Florida Humanities Council this program is free and open to the public. Call (904) 261-7378 Ext 102 for more information.

Can the events be for a fee.  We have art workshops but they are not free although open to anyone who wished to attend and pay the fee.  These are nationally known instructors and  do not come for free.

  7. Ameliaprivateeye

    Hi Sandra,
Events that are one day events are perfect for the calendar, and of course multiple day festivals, even if there is a fee or admission price. If the event/class is multiple days a press release is encouraged, and we publish those for free, too. (Sometimes we will put them in the calendar AND publish the press release information.) If you have any other questions about SearchAmelia, you can email me directly at Judie@SearchAmelia.com

  8. Aspasia the Promulgator
