The Fernandina Beach Market Place farmers market and the Fernandina Beach Arts Market will be open October 19, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., rain or shine. The farmers market boasts nearly 40 tents of original, producer made, home grown, or hand crafted baked goods, seasonal produce, and gourmet jams and jellies. If you shop among our farmers and grower booths, you will notice an amazing difference between fresh grown and store bought vegetables. The seedless European cucumbers grown by Bacon Select Produce, in a climate controlled Oceanway greenhouse, are harvested the day before the market and only shipped about 25 miles. The seedless cucumbers found at Harris Teeter are a product of Canada, so you can only imagine the additional consumption of natural resources that are used just to bring those foreign cucumbers to Amelia Island, Florida.
Food travels about 1,500 miles to get from the farm, to your local grocery store, and then to your table. Cucumbers are waxed, citrus is gassed, and potatoes can easily be stored for five weeks or more before consumption. The food at a farmers market is fresh.
