Florida Public Utilities Tips

Florida Public Utilities has always offered energy saving tips and suggestions that cost you little or no money to implement. Since SearchAmelia has been focusing on storm preparedness and safety information, you should take a look at their website to find natural gas, propane gas and electricity users storm safety and preparation tips.

Also, important to note is Florida Public Utilities’ Medical Alert Program. This is offered to customers whose electrical service is medically essential. Customers requiring life-sustaining equipment (such as heart monitors, oxygen concentrators, controlled medications, controlled atmosphere, etc.) can rely on Florida Public Utilities to provide special consideration for their accounts.

If you or a member of your family uses life-sustaining equipment, please call your local FPU office at (904) 261-3663. A customer service representative will give you details about the Medical Alert Program and tell you how to qualify. If you are already on the Medical Alert Program, please contact them again to renew your certification. Annual certification is required.

What you may not know about Florida Public Utilities and the tips they offer is if you visit their office at 911 South 8th Street in Fernandina Beach, you can pick up a Flip the Switch Tips of the Month coupon. Each month they post a new tip with a coupon for a local business.

The most recent coupon I saw (dated 04/10) was for Sonny’s Bar-B-Q and it expired on 05/25/10, but the tips are still good:
-During warmer weather, set A/C thermostats at 78 degrees or higher to save energy.
-Install a programmable thermostat.
-Keep cool air inside by caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows and sealing air leaks.
-Turn off ceiling fans, computers and monitors when not in use.

However, they have an older Flip the Switch Tips of the Month coupon (dated 03/10) for 10% off of Beef O’Brady’s that has no expiration date!
-Set thermostats at 68 degrees or lower to save energy while wearing seasonally appropriate clothing.
-Keep warm air inside by caulking and weatherstripping doors and windows, and sealing air leaks.
-Close blinds and curtains at night to trap warm air inside and open them during the day to let in the warm sunshine.
-Follow manufacturer instructions for proper space heater use to ensure safety and efficiency.

While the timing of these tips and their publication is questionable from a marketing standpoint, the coupons are a great idea because practically everyone is interested in saving money!

Keep at it FPU – you may be on to something here!
