Jacksonville, FL – Friends and family have organized the Russell Buckland Friends for Life Bone Marrow Drive at Terry Parker High School, 7301 Parker School Rd., Jacksonville on Saturday, April 13, 10:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the school’s café. The event is being held to raise community awareness to the importance of becoming and registering as a bone marrow donor.
Russell Buckland, of Jacksonville, is a 47-year old father who is fighting for his life. A 1983 graduate of Terry Parker High School, Buckland was recently diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and his only chance for survival is to receive a life-saving bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor.
A dedicated father to his 13-year old son, Buckland is an avid hunter and a third degree black belt in American Taekwondo (ATA). Father and son enjoy spending quality time together in the outdoors as well as in the dojo. Buckland and his son share a strong bond; recently his son had his head shaved to show love and support for his dad, who is undergoing chemotherapy. They are asking for the community’s help to find a perfect match. “My number one priority is being a dad. I want to beat cancer so I can continue to be a positive role model for my son,” said Buckland.
We need you!
Every day thousands of patients search for a bone marrow donor match. Only four out of 10 patients are lucky enough to receive a transplant. “I lost my mother to leukemia when I was 14,” said Katharina Harf, Co-Founder of Delete Blood Cancer, “and I have made it my mission to recruit more donors so that other families don’t have to go through the pain we did. We need your help so we can save more lives.”
