Gift Giving on a Tight Budget

Gift giving is a common occurance and I don’t know about you, but with higher utility bills combined with joining the ranks of under-employment, our household is running on a tight family budget. We needed a gift for a house warming present and plants are always a perfect gift for this occassion. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the cash to run out and purchase a couple of houseplants or a nice tree, so we came up with an alternative gift idea that was warmly received and fit the celebration perfectly.

We made fern baskets. Ferns grow naturally in Northeast Florida, and they are abundant. Actually, they can be rather invasive and I am always pulling them from my flower beds. My husband went to the store and purchased a bag of dirt and four, plastic terra cotta hanging baskets while my daughter and I pulled up younger ferns from our own yard.

The other supplies we needed were a hand trowel to plant the ferns and a pair of scissors to cut the excess roots from the ferns. We set up an assembly line of pots, dirt and plants and went to work. The creativity flowed as the ferns were arranged by size putting smaller ones in the middle and using the longer ferns at the outer edges of the pots so they would flow over the sides of the hanging baskets.

First we added dirt, then carefully placed the selected ferns where we wanted them and added more dirt as we went along to help hold the tender plantings in place. After that, just add water! We finished the four baskets, created a greeting card on the computer and we were done. We had made, as a family, the perfect house warming gift for about one quarter of what the plants would have cost us in the store.

The next time you need a gift and are tight on cash, get creative – you will surprise yourself with the cool ideas that will come to mind.
