The month of October brings a great excuse for a weekend getaway to Oktoberfest in Helen, Georgia. Tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NE Georgia, Helen is a re-creation of an alpine village. Year round activities include spectacular scenery, restaurants, shopping, fishing, history and more, but in October, Oktoberfest is the big draw for this community on the Chattahoochee River.

Helen Oktoberfest boasts the longest running Oktoberfest in America and is held from mid-September until the first weekend in November. Admission to the Helen Festhalle is $7.00 on weekdays, $9.00 on Saturdays and FREE on Sundays. German style bands, beer and brats are there to entertain you while you take a spin on the dance floor or enjoy the show with friends seated at inviting rows of long tables.

There are plenty of lodging options available in hotels, motels, camping, bed and breakfast inn and cabins as well.

About an hour and a half outside of Atlanta, take I-85 North. Go north to Gainesville Exit 113, which is I-985 and turns into Hwy. 365. Go 42 miles continuing on Hwy. 365 to Hwy. 384. Turn left, go 16 miles to GA Hwy. 75, turn right and go three miles into Helen.

Great food, great beer and great people. We spent a couple of days during the month of October once and I will always remember the good time we had. This may be a great time to make a weekend trip back to Helen again!! Not that far and who knows what next year will bring?

I have some friends who did this with a group on motorcycles. They stayed in a lovely cabin and said the riding was spectacular, especially with the changing of the fall foliage and comfortable temperatures for wearing leathers.
