Memories from a Friend

I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons.

clothessprinkler002_fullMy Dad is cleaning out my grandmother’s house (she died in December) and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to ‘sprinkle’ clothes with because we didn’t have steam irons. Man, I am old.

How many do you remember?

-Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.
-Ignition switches on the dashboard.
-Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall.
-Real ice boxes.
-Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
-Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.
-Using hand signals for cars without turn signals.

The wash board with a piece of soap and the wringer to wring the water out the clothes with turning handle mounted on a piece of wood.

The turntable with ingenious penstyle record holder that after every 45″ would drop a new vinyl so you could listen to mltiple records wthout having to change them (after 5 you had to anyway because the thing didn't hold more than 5)

The gas stove cast iron waffel iron – adding butter until it melted, your dough closing with pressure the waffle iron and turnng it over.

The thick slices of Dark Rey Bread with real butter and old Dutch Cheese and for good measure lathered with Rinse apple Stroop.

Bicycle with back paddle breaks – and if they didn't function, the soles of your shoes to emergency stop after you got the first jerk forward when trying to back peddle, all together with the wooden cloth pins in your pant legs to avoid them getting caught-up in the chain and cam wheel.

Man, where getting old and hungry now thinking about that old Dutch cheese on Rey bread.

My mom had one on the ironing board also. It seems she was ironing all the time, today most homes can't find the ironing board or may not have one at all. Dimmer switch on the floor, man that brings back memories.
