First let me say my mom is not a great cook. Don’t worry, I am not hurting her feelings; she knows this. Most of my friends talk about the wonderful cooks their moms are, but not mine. As a matter of fact I often mention her lack of kitchen skills in many of my articles. However, she does have a handful or so of really good recipes and her Split Pea Soup is one of them.

If you are looking for something to do with that leftover ham bone from Christmas dinner, this may be the recipe for you:

Ingredients:
1 pound green split peas
1 meaty ham bone
1 1/2 cups sliced onion
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/4 tsp. dried marjoram, crushed
1 cup diced celery
1 cup diced carrots

Directions:
Rinse peas; combine with 2 quarts water, ham bone, onion, salt, pepper and marjoram.
Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce heat to simmer.
Simmer (don’t boil) for about 1 1/2 hours.
Stir occasionally.
Remove bone, cut off meat and dice.
Return meat to soup, and add celery and carrots.
Cook slowly, uncovered, for another 30-40 minutes.

Brisk enough this morning for a good Dutch pea soup. Your mom’s recipe is pretty close, but missing a couple of ingredients such as a table spoon of Indonesian Sambal to spice it up a bit and Maggi Vegetable Dices for deeper flavor.
