March 14th is a day of unusual celebrations such as Butterflies Day, Potato Chip Day and National Pi Day. I wasn’t going to event write about these three strange celebrations, but we had so much fun discussing it at dinner, that I had to let others share in the strange fun-ness of it all!

Butterflies Day – Butterflies are cool and everyone likes them. Kids like to watch them and they are easy to catch. March brings us spring and this means we can enjoy more outside activities and in turn, see more butterflies. If you are looking for something to do today, why not pick up a book or go on line and research a bit about butterflies? Then you can go outside and try to identify them.

National Potato Chip Day – Always held on March 14th this one makes you ask, “Are you kidding me?” Well, no we are not kidding you. Apparently, potato chips are America’s favorite snack and it is the potato of choice for a side dish with a meal, at parties and especially when watching sports.

Potato chips come in many flavors and they are oh-so-bad for you when it comes to healthy eating and nutrition. First invented in 1853, potato chips have been popular ever since. So, something to do to celebrate this odd occasion would be to stay at home, become a couch potato and indulge in this salty and often greasy snack. Mmmm – I can hear my arteries hardening as I think about them!

National Pi Day – Also always held on March 14th celebrates Pi, a mathematical concept and a number that never ends… so we just round it off to 3.14. Maybe that is why 03/14 is National Pi Day?

It is also the birthday of Albert Einstein. Einstein, a physicist, was born on March 14, 1879, though Pi was born before Mr. Einstein.
