New Farmer’s Market Opens in Downtown Fernandina Beach

Amelia Island Market Place Opens New Farmers Market in Historic Fernandina Beach, Florida

New Farmer's Market Opens in Downtown Fernandina BeachFernandina Beach, FL – When the popular farmer’s market in historic, downtown Fernandina Beach suddenly relocated to the Omni Amelia Island Plantation, the Amelia Island Market Place stepped up to fill the void.

Originally planned to open in a different location this fall, the Fernandina Beach Market Place was prepared to take on the unexpected challenge of opening a new farmer’s market with only three days notice of approval from the City Commissioners of Fernandina Beach.

The new market opened September 8, 2012, with just a handful of vendors, and the community responded by showing up in numbers. Fresh produce, home-made soaps, breads, honey, olives and more were displayed on N. 7th Street. Popular, local dishes such as Lulu’s crab cakes, and pickles from Kelley’s Courtyard Cafe were wildly popular at the friendly market. One vendor, The Bread Company, completely sold out of product before noon, and Melanie of Lulu’s at the Thompson House had to bring in additional crab cakes. Local musician Gabriel Arnold delighted shoppers and exhibitors alike as he aptly displayed his amazing talent by playing the saxophone.

Each week the market is adding new vendors. September 15th brings more new vendors, a local pastry company, coffee made in Yulee and more. The Bread Company is so delighted to be part of the Amelia Island Market Place he is offering free pita bread to his first 50 Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach residents.

Amelia Island Market Place is open Saturdays, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on North 7th Street in Fernandina Beach. The owners, Drs. Elizabeth and Joe Lee, are committed to see a farmer’s market stay in Fernandina. Expect additional exhibitors to be added each week. The Market Place hopes to add a little variety each week by featuring exceptional vendors, showing off the local talents of our community, creating the occasional fun event, and by offering a local, non-profit organization the opportunity to share their messages.
