New Ferry Service

The Cumberland Sound Ferry Service is offering round trip service, three days a week between Fernandina Beach, FL and St. Marys in Georgia. “We’re already seeing more foot traffic in St. Marys and Fernandina Beach,” Janet Brinko, director of the St. Marys Convention and Visitors Bureau said. “Business has increased at downtown shops and restaurants.”

In 1916, a passenger steamer called The Hildegarde, was the last passenger steamer to ferry the Cumberland Sound between the cities. Amelia River Cruises and Charters, co-owned by Kevin McCarthy, has a family connection to the The Hildegarde. Walton Goodbread, McCarthy’s wife’s great-uncle, was the captain of The Hildegarde.

“A little less than a hundred years later, we’re going back into the family business,” McCarthy said.

Round-trip tickets are $15.00 and the ferry runs Thursday through Saturday.
