New Play at Amelia Community Theatre

New Play at Amelia Community Theatre

Opening February 12 at ACT: Those Who Fall in Love Like Anchors Dropped Upon the Ocean Floor

Amelia Community Theatre continues its 40th season with the main stage production, Those Who Fall in Love like Anchors Dropped Upon the Ocean Floor.

Award-winning Australian playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer has written a “once upon a time” love story about love and time. Four actors take the audience on a time-looping journey with stops and rewinds at a Parisian watch shop, an Appalachian snowfield, a Russian submarine, and an ordinary restaurant.

The cast includes Wendy Gilvey, M.K. Larsen, Nicholas Marquardt, and Ron Price. They play characters getting to know each other while hunting rabbits in the snow, and characters who don’t quite connect on a blind date. One poignant tale involves a shopkeeper waiting for a woman to return for the watch she left with him to repair.

The show is co-directed by ACT’s Executive Director Tener Wade and Lisa Howard-Welch, who directed last season’s Leading Ladies.

Director Howard-Welch says, “We don’t often see plays with a storytelling format for adults and this play does just that. In our world today, perhaps what we need is to sit back and have a wonderful love story told to us.” She adds, “Our themes are pretty clear – love is pretty obvious. All kinds. Young, second chance, unrequited, serendipitous, and even spontaneous love. But, also time. All of the events within this play are at the mercy of time and at certain points in the play could go either way… find love, or find a broken heart.”

Director Wade says, “I’m very excited for audiences to watch the characters in this play fall in love. This show is a wonderful reminder about how love can bend the laws of time. This is a fantastic modern show where everyone onstage is telling unique stories and encouraging the audience to come along for the ride.”

Performances, both in-person and live-streamed, are at 8 p.m. on February 12-13, 18-20, 25-27 and at 2 p.m. on February 14 and 21 at 207 Cedar Street. The show is rated PG-13 for adult language.

In-person tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students through college. Masks are required for in-person attendance, with limited, socially-distanced assigned seating for each party. Livestream tickets are $15 for an individual, $30 for a household of 2-4 people, and $90 for a group of 5-10.
