October 4th is World Animal Day

On World Animal Day it's going to be a party for our dogs, two rescues from different backgrounds

World Animal Day was started by a group of ecologists in Florence Italy in 1931. They were initially discussing the plight of endangered species and suggested an annual special day to celebrate animal life. October 4th was chosen to honor Saint Francis of nearby Assisi, the patron saint of all animals.

The objectives of World Animal Day are described as follows:

  • To celebrate animal life in all its forms
  • To celebrate humankind‚Äôs relationship with the animal kingdom
  • To acknowledge the diverse roles that animals play in our lives ‚Äì from being our companions, supporting and helping us, to bringing a sense of wonder into our lives
  • To acknowledge and be thankful for the way in which animals enrich our lives

Since the launching of the official website on October 4th, 2003 World Animal Day has grown into a major event worldwide with festivities in every country across the globe…..except the USA?! Yes, the country that celebrates almost any valid, weird or wacky annual day, has done very little in the field of recognizing World Animal Day.

When I met my wife, whose birthdate is October 4th, she admitted that she had never even heard of such a day, even though she is an extreme animal lover. Looking at the World Animal Day website for events on October 4th I only find a handful spread around the US and I’m discouraged.

For an Fun day like we just celebrated on September 19, International Speak Like A Pirate’s Day, we can get the likes of comedian Dave Barry to get the word out and millions to participate, but on something as worthy as celebrating our sentient co-inhabitants of this planet we can not even adequately get the message out.

In school in Holland the whole day was about pet education, pet care, pet play and learning of animals in the wild and in zoos. Sometimes the whole class went to help the zoo-keeper in the local city zoo cleaning cages and feeding the animals.

Knowing how litigious this country is that would probably not work here, but how about helping out for a day at the local Humane Society or Animal Welfare.

We have 2 dogs, 2 year old Snorkie Scootertje, a rescue victim form Jacksonville and 19 year old “Coconut” retriever Chanel, rescued from the streets of St.Maarten where the average dog’s street life is 10 months.

The World Animal Day will be doubly festive for them with beach walks, breakfast and dinner and quite some playtime and maybe a toy or two.
