Fernandina Beach, FL – Progress continues on the update to the City’s historic district design guidelines. Drafts of the Downtown and Old Town Guideline updates are available for review in hard copy at 204 Ash Street or at www.fbfl.us/historicdistrict/guidelines. Comments on the drafts are welcomed and should be submitted to the Community Development Department by January 31st.
Final drafts will be sent to the state Division of Historical Resources by April 30, 2013. The state will review the drafts and provide comments, and the City then has until June 30 to finalize state recommendations. Upon final approval by the state, the guidelines will be reviewed for adoption by the City Commission, which should take place in early Fall 2013.
The Historic District Council has been involved in the draft review process and will take action on the drafts prior to sending them to the state at upcoming regular meetings, where public comment is also welcome. Staff anticipates providing an interim update on the process to the City Commission in May.
The Division of Historical Resources awarded the City a $19,500 grant to complete the updates. No match was required by the City. Thomason and Associates of Nashville, TN is the consultant working on the updates. The guidelines were last updated in 1999 by the University of Florida.
