The dinners include half a smoked chicken, cole slaw and baked beans - unique recipes that go great together - there are never any leftovers.
Fernandina Beach, FL – Book lovers will have more than books to feast on when Friends of the Library (FOL) holds its next book sale, November 5-7 at the Peck Center on 10th Street. The Organized Firefighters of Fernandina Beach (OFFB) are cooking up smoked chicken dinners in tandem with the sale to help raise funds for library improvements.
James Tucker, OFFB president, announced the plan several months ago at a Fernandina Beach City Commission meeting in which the Firefighters presented a $500 check to the FOL for its capital campaign. “We are thrilled with this wonderful show of support,” said Bill Flynn, FOL president. “Firefighters are really at the heart of our community and they know how important good libraries are.”
The dinners include half a smoked chicken, cole slaw and baked beans. “The slaw will be similar to what we made for the cookout at main beach several months ago with pineapple in it. The chicken and slaw are unique recipes that go great together – we’ve never had any leftovers. It is a pleasure to continue our partnership with Friends of the Library and to see our beautiful library furnished.”
Tickets will be sold in advance at the Library on N 4th Street and at the Book Loft on Center Street. They will also be sold throughout the book sale. Dinners, $15 each or two for $25, will be ready to pick up on the last day of the sale, Saturday, November 7, from firefighters stationed in the athletic field by the Peck Center from noon to 2:30 pm.
The Book Sale kicks off Thursday, November 5, with a special FOL members-only preview from 5pm – 7pm in the Peck Center Gym. Non-members can join at the door and get first choice of thousands of books and DVDS for sale. (Membership is $15 for students; $35 for individuals, $50 for a couple or $75 for a family.)
Doors will open to all on Friday, November 6, from 9:30 am – 6 pm, and Saturday, Nov. 7 from 9:30 am–2 pm. Readers will find thousands of novels, biographies, histories, art, children’s books, sports, cooking and more, plus CDs, DVDs and audio books. Most are priced at $2.00 or less.
All books are donated and every penny raised provides the Fernandina Beach Library with new books, e-books, subscriptions, periodicals, network access and databases for job applications, resumes, certification tests for various careers, and more. In the past two years alone, FOL book sales have raised approximately $50,000 to supplement library collections.
Proceeds from Firefighters’ Dinners will go to FOL’s capital campaign to purchase furniture, equipment, collection upgrades and other items for the library. You can learn about FOL membership and how to donate and help, at www.fernandinaFOL.org, (904) 321-6529 or e-mail info@fernandinaFOL.org.
