Not only are the older folks changing, I am beginning to see the younger generation doing the same. Now in my sixties I was afraid that this younger generation would not adapt, but perhaps I'm wrong on this one. It is funny how a downturn in the economy can change everything in one's life. Our grandparents survived and so shall we.

Today’s society thinks that just because you are a belly dancer, you’re automatically a stripper, or worse. I have recently started dancing, learning from Sajah. Usually with every class, there are numerous “side lessons” that we are taught, along with the movements. These have to do with the history of the moves, costumes, etc. It has been such an eye opener to find out how long this art form has been around, and what it all means.

In the short time I have been dancing, I have gained a very healthy respect for these fabulous women. Who else could move so gracefully wearing 3 skirts, a pair of harem pants, belts, heavily decorated tops, and pounds of jewelry; all while balancing a rather heavy sword on the top of their heads.

For anyone who thinks that we’re all just a bunch of weird women, I invite you to come enjoy a class with us. Find out for yourself what it’s all about, and help to break the stereotypical image of belly dancers.
