Republican Senator, Roger Wicker from Mississippi has introduced a bill seeking insurance relief for coastal residents affected by hurricanes in 2004, ‚’05 or ’06. The bill would give residents a one time credit, up to $5,000, if their insurance premium has increased 50 percent over a three year period. The tax credit would be worth 50% of the difference from the premium’s original rate and its three year increase. A permanent tax credit of up to the same amount per year is also attached to the bill for homeowners who make hurricane improvements to their homes. Other Republican co-sponsors of the bill are Thad Cochran, Mel Martinez and David Vitter all from gulf coastal states.
