Shandra Riffey of Micah’s Place Addresses Sunrise Rotary

Shandra Riffey spoke to Rotary Amelia Island Sunrise about Micah's Place, the only certified domestic violence center for Nassau County.

Shandra Riffey of Micah's Place Addresses Sunrise RotaryAmelia Island, FL – Shandra Riffey, Executive Director of Micah’s Place, spoke to the Rotary Club of Amelia Island Sunrise at the club’s regular meeting on Friday, October 12, 2012. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Micah’s Place is the only certified domestic violence center for Nassau County, Florida.

Working from a location most of us never see and helping people we may never meet, Riffey described for the Rotary members the many ways Micah’s Place assists victims of domestic violence and how her organization promotes domestic violence awareness and prevention throughout the local community. For example, Micah’s Place is working with middle schools in Nassau County to support an anti-bullying program, and they are also sponsoring a dating violence prevention program in local high schools.

More than just a shelter for women and children, Micah’s Place actively partners with other local organizations to help prevent domestic violence and to assist victims. The organization is entirely dependent upon grants and donations from the community, and they also operate the Purple Dove Resale Center, selling gently used furniture, household items, and ladies clothing to further support their operations. Next year is the organization’s 10th anniversary, and they will be celebrating the number “10” in a variety of ways throughout 2013. Anyone who is interested in volunteering or making donations to Micah’s Place can call 904-491-6364 for more information.
