It is easy to want to take in all of the sites when you are on vacation, but you really do need to rest properly and stay hydrated. By keeping a few things in mind you will increase your chance of staying healthy and avoiding sickness on your next vacation.
The last thing you want to happen while you are on holiday is to get sick. To stay healthy on vacation there are a few things you can do ahead of time and during your trip to put the odds in your favor.
If you are traveling abroad it is important that you protect yourself by having up to date vaccinations and depending on your destination, you may also need other medications or vaccines to prevent some diseases such as malaria. Your family practitioner can tell you what you need.
If you are currently taking prescribed medications be sure and take enough with you on your trip, and enough for a few extra days just in case you encounter an unexpected delay. Carry any prescriptions in your carry on bag should your luggage get lost. Keep them in their original bottle with the prescribing information label firmly affixed. You may need a letter from your doctor confirming they are prescribed to you if you are traveling to a foreign country.
Pack a first aid kit and bring it with you. Over the counter medicines may not be as easy to come by in other countries as they are here at home. Don’t forget the sunscreen and the Pepto-Bismol tablets, just in case!
You are what you eat, so be careful. I once had a bout of Montezuma’s Revenge after drinking a bottled soda, over foreign ice. The ice was made from contaminated water. Avoid food and drinks from street vendors, undercooked meat or raw seafood and don’t trust fresh fruits and vegetables. I also will only drink bottled water or other beverages in sealed containers, or something that has been boiled like coffee, unless I am at a reputable establishment. I even brush my teeth with bottled water.
