The Amelia Concours Week concludes with a grand finale as the 20th Annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, March 15, opens the International Concours season on the fairways of the Golf Club of Amelia Island, adjacent to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The three-day event includes the Eight Flags Road Tour, seminars on Friday and Saturday, the Automotive Fine Arts Society’s annual show, an automotive photography exhibit, silent auction, Guardians of Porsche Wine Maker’s dinner, BMW dinner, Mercedes-Benz USA black tie gala and the new MotorXpo. The 2015 event will celebrate the 60th anniversary of Mercedes-Benz World Sports Car and Formula 1 Drivers Championships, Stutz, the BMW328, Chrysler’s legendary Town and Country and the Porsche 914. In celebration of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance’s 20th anniversary, Sir Stirling Moss, OBE, the first honoree from 1996, will return to Amelia for the event. More than 20 of Sir Stirling’s significant racing cars will be on the field on Sunday, March 15, among nearly 300 rare vehicles from collections around the world. Vehicles on display include rare classics and prototype cars as well as a selection of significant race cars. The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Foundation has donated more than $2.5 million to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, inc and other charities on Florida’s First Coast since its inception in 1996.

Festivals of Speed Raised 50K for Communities in Schools

Festivals of Speed Raised 50K for Communities in SchoolsThe Festivals of Speed event returned to Amelia Island March 7-8, and resulted in $50,000 in much needed funding to Communities In Schools for additional services to more Nassau County children and teens.

“The Festivals of Speed kicked off with a luxury lifestyle event attended by 400, and featured a live and silent auction to benefit our children,” explained Susan Milana, CIS executive director. An upgraded MGB was the highlight of our charity auction and went home with a very happy bidder.”

“With this wonderful level of support from our community, the Omni Amelia Island, Hollywood Wheels and the Festivals of Speed, this event will be our most important and profitable fundraiser for years to come,” said Milana.

“We could not have been happier with the Festivals of Speed this year on Amelia Island, stated Joe Sabatini, Festivals of Speed President. “Attendance and car participants doubled from last year and we see further growth in 2015.”

Sabatini explained, “We could not have done it without the overwhelming support of the Amelia Island community, our charity, Communities In Schools, and the team at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation. Everyone came together in a grass roots effort to create a wonderful event for all to enjoy. Sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers and every team member at the Omni are due a round of applause for their tireless efforts on behalf of this event.”

Festivals of Speed organizers emphasized that “we partnered with CIS because they provide much-needed services to thousands of children and teens right here in Nassau County, and many more across America.”

More Classic Cars Coming to The Amelia 2013

More Classic Cars Coming to The Amelia 2013As we approach the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, my in-box is filling up with updated information. What cars are coming, who has agreed to be a guest speaker, and information about a new, less expensive event, the Festivals of Speed, benefiting Spina Bifida of Jacksonville, for only $20.00 per ticket.

The Amelia now includes “Coffee and Cars,” on Saturday for FREE! The Festivals of Speed is Saturday for only $20.00 (though I saw a two-for-one Groupon somewhere), and of course, The Amelia takes place on Sunday with tickets going for only $75.00 each.

I don’t know what you are thinking, but apparently, NE Florida, namely Amelia Island, is the place to show off classic cars and the finer things in life!

Whether you attend one event or all of them, the money raised for Hospice of NE Florida by The Amelia, or for Spina Bifida by the Festivals of Speed, you are contributing to wonderful causes.

Here is one of the latest emails from The Amelia:

Amelia Island, FL – Edsel Ford’s “continental car”, a custom boattail speedster, will take its rightful place in the Sports Car Class of the 18th annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. In the shape of Edsel’s seminal speedster is the genesis of Ford’s legendary design department.

Edsel Ford was hardly “a chip off the old block”. The acorn fell well away from the mighty oak that was Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company. Edsel was not just the President of Ford, he was a car guy to his core. His tastes and passions still resonate in the lines of Ford’s contemporary cars.

Edsel was enchanted by European sports cars. His trips to Europe, he called it “the continent”, triggered visions of Fords with “continental” styling. In 1934 what would become Ford’s in-house design department created his first “long, low and rakish continental car” (as Edsel described it to his designer and confederate E.T “Bob” Gregorie) on a ’32 Ford chassis.

His boattail speedster had Ford V-8 power and running gear wrapped in a sleek, all-aluminum boattail body made by Ford’s aircraft division. It was just what Edsel Ford wanted and had described. No running boards and a steeply raked split windshield that disguised Edsel’s continental car’s humble assembly line origins.

The Continental name stuck. Within the decade, the radical new Lincoln Continental was a stylish world class luxury contender. When the 1939 Lincoln Continental debuted, the world famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright called it “the most beautiful car in the world”. All because Edsel Ford wanted a sports car when he came home from Europe.

When Edsel’s boattail speedster was resurrected and restored more than seven decades later, the new owners, Jim and Bonnie Gombos, spent five years returning it to Edsel’s original specifications. They even painted it “gunmetal gray”, Edsel’s favorite color.
