Storytellers Vie For Champion in Fernandina Library Fundraiser

Storytellers Vie For Champion in Fernandina Library FundraiserYou’ll giggle, laugh and maybe even cry when six area storytellers compete for the coveted title of Island Tales Story Champion on September 30 at Burns Hall, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in downtown Fernandina Beach.

This year’s theme ‘I Was So Embarrassed!” promises to be a rousing, hilarious storytelling event. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and libations first, then sit back and be regaled by some of the area’s finest storytellers.

The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with island-themed delights sponsored by Lulu’s Restaurant and a cash bar. The storytellers take the stage at 7:00 pm to entertain you and earn your cash votes.

The stakes are high as audience members will vote with cash for their favorite storyteller. Tickets for votes will be on sale during the event with proceeds helping fund the Friends of the Library Capital Campaign for the newly renovated Fernandina Beach Library.

Competing for champion bragging rights are: Doris Davis, a beach lover, actress and director of Christian education at First Presbyterian Church; Geoffrey King, a Scottish lad who found his calling on the theatrical stage; Frank O’Donnell, a champion for clean air laws who has appeared as a “talking head” on every major television network; Marsha Dean Phelts, a former librarian for the Duval County Public School system and Florida Genealogy Collection of the Jacksonville Public Library system; Thea Seagraves, a former mime and current Education Director at the Amelia Island Museum of History; and Doug McDowell serving as Master of Ceremonies, an accomplished amateur actor, struggling playwright, and all-around supporter of the arts.

“We’re delighted to have such great participation and impressive talent for our third year’s event,” says Dee Torre, FOL President and Capital Campaign chair. “Stories and libraries are such a natural fit.”

Advance tickets for the reception and storytelling slam are $50 for general admission and $65 for reserved seating. Tickets are available for sale at the Fernandina Beach Library, 25 N 4th Street, or online at www.FernandinaFOL.org.

Imagine No Malaria

Imagine No MalariaThe United Methodist Church is calling its entire denomination to partner with our sisters and brothers in Africa to eradicate Malaria. Malaria is a 100% preventable disease transmitted through mosquito bites that steals a life every 60 seconds. Most victims are pregnant women and children in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The United Methodist Church in Florida committed to raising $2.5 million of the $75 million goal of the “Imagine No Malaria” initiative. Imagine No Malaria hopes to achieve victory over this deadly disease through prevention, education, communication and treatment.

Imagine No Malaria achieves prevention mainly by distributing bed nets and teaching families how to use them. For the cost of just $10, a bed net protects multiple members of a family for up to three years. In addition, the program teaches simple means of avoiding malaria, such as eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed.

Through the education initiative, Imagine No Malaria trains a grassroots network of community health workers. These community members are best-equipped to earn trust in reaching the local people and to ensure the information continues to be shared well into the future.

For communication, Imagine No Malaria distributes radios to village chiefs. These radios receive broadcasts regarding prevention, outbreaks, and treatment of the disease.

Finally, Imagine No Malaria partners with hospitals and clinics to improve diagnosis, case management and access to medication for malaria victims.

In honor of World Malaria Day, Memorial United Methodist Church will host a booth at the Fernandina Beach Market Place (North 7th Street) on April 25, from 9:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Visit the booth to learn what you can do to stop this disease. You may make donations at the booth, or deliver them to Memorial United Methodist Church at 601 Centre Street, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034. Please make checks payable to “MUMC” and designate “INM” on the memo line.

For additional information, contact Sarah Flint at (904)261-5769 or see imaginenomalaria.org.
