Micah’s Place Requests Assistance for Victims of Domestic Violence

Nassau County, FLThe holidays are fast approaching. But many victims of domestic violence don’t have the luxury of providing even the simplest of items for their children.

“We think everyone deserves a Christmas and to have something they can open up on this special day,” said Heather Jones, Chief Executive Officer of Micah’s Place, “Donations of new, unwrapped toys and gift cards are requested to stock the Micah’s Place Christmas Program and help provide Christmas to families in our shelter and outreach, who otherwise may not have one”.

As in past years, we are requesting the support of our community organizations like churches, clubs, and every one in between, to ensure that every child in our program receives a Merry Christmas.

Please consider purchasing a new toy or gift card between now and December 7th, and drop it, unwrapped, into one of the boxes at the following locations:
-Beech Street Bar & Grill.801 Beech St, Fernandina Beach
-Amelia Island Plantation Real Estate. 10 Amelia Village Circle. Fernandina Beach

The Purple Dove Resale Store Hires New Manager

The Purple Dove Resale Store Hires New ManagerThe Purple Dove Resale Store, located at 474311 E. SR 200, Fernandina Beach, Florida, would like to announce the appointment of a new Store Manager, Carrie Pokines.

Carrie has been with the Purple Dove as a Sales Associate for over a year and a half before taking on her new role with the organization.

The Purple Dove belongs to the Micah’s Place, Inc. family of services, which provide the only Certified Domestic Violence Center serving Nassau County, among their free and confidential services.

Carrie and the Purple Dove Team of Sales Associates and Volunteers, are working to bring new services and programs to the store.

One of the first exciting changes will be a revamping of the store itself. As a result the store will be closed over the dates of July 29, 30, 31, 2015 – and reopening on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 9:00 am.

During the store will still accept drop off donations at the front door.

Why Give to the Purple Dove Resale Store?
When domestic violence victims show up at our door, they come with very little, other than their children and their lives. Often they come to us emotionally or physically bruised, their children craving safety, stability and peace. The Purple Dove and Micah’s Place provide services that will help survivors through each step of their journey to recovery.

Micah’s Place provides food, shelter and advocacy, as well as assisting with employment, housing and support groups which encourage empowerment.

The Purple Dove provides things like clothing, household items and other items to reestablish a safe life, all at no cost to them. Donated items not needed by program participants are sold with proceeds supporting the Micah’s Place Programs. Items we are unable to use, such as torn or stained items, are sent to a second charity who make good use of them.

It’s not a small undertaking but your generosity makes our work possible, and in return we work to ensure every donation you give makes a real difference in the lives of survivors and their children.

By opening your heart and donating to The Purple Dove Resale Store you play a part in changing lives, as evidenced by this recent letter from a past participant: “How could I have survived this without all of you helping me? How could I have faced this time of trials in my life without the love, support and concern that each of you shared with me? I could never imagine it. I will cherish and never forget that each of you took the time to just be there and listen to me and to help me find my way through this. Your kindness is immeasurable. Even more so, the continued concern and care that each of you has provided to my children and myself has given me such a renewed faith in the kindness of the human spirit and our gracious community of folks ready to take a stand for those of us in need of help. Thank you… you have all inspired me to give even more of myself to others that cross my path in this lifetime.”
-Domestic Violence Survivor/Nassau County Resident

Whether you buy, or donate your gently used items, we want to thank you. We could not do this without our donors, community partners and volunteers!

We are normally open Monday – Friday, 10am – 5pm. Saturday 9am – 5pm. Closed Sunday.
We take tax deductable donations by drop off and are happy to pick up larger items by appointment.
We are always in need of donations and volunteers. Thank you for your support. For more information please call (904) 261-5227.

Runners shine, even in the rain

Runners shine, even in the rainDespite sporadic rain showers, runners from around Nassau – and neighboring counties – shined bright during the Micah’s Place “Taking Strides to End Abuse” 5K/Fun Run/Kids Zone.

The 2nd annual event, which kicked off at Central Park, was held on Saturday, April 25th, took runners on a trek down Atlantic Avenue, with a finish line near the Park.

While temperatures in the mid-70s and a steady rain overshadowed the race, they couldn’t outshine the blistering pace set by many runners on what many considered a “fast” course.

race-1The race’s overall winner was Laura DiBella, 36, of Fernandina Beach, who finished the race with a time of 19:18, and an impressive pace of 6:13. DiBella was one of eight runners who finished the race with a pace under seven minutes.

While not all participants ran at top speed, everyone shone brighter than the overcast skies, with many runners wearing purple in support of Victims of Domestic Violence.

“It was a fabulous day for runners, walkers and spectators. We are so thrilled to have so many committed community members show their support, despite the weather. As we know, Domestic Violence doesn’t stop for bad weather – so neither will we.” said Heather Jones, Chief Executive Officer for Micah’s Place.

Micah’s Place Style Show and Luncheon Video Review

Micah's Place Style Show and Luncheon Video ReviewOsprey Village on Amelia Island was home to the recent Style Show and Luncheon benefiting Micah’s Place, a Certified Domestic Violence Center serving the residents of Nassau County, Florida.

The room was full of women wearing houndstooth, leather, florals, animal prints and a large number of them donned Micah’s signature color, purple. These supporters ventured out on a very cold February day to preview the upcoming spring fashions from Chico’s and the Monkey Barrel, while enjoying a scumptious lunch, and perhaps taking a chance to win one of the great raffle prizes donated by local companies like David’s Restaurant, the Hoyt House and Dome Healing Center.

Micah’s Place Director of Development, Marianna McIntyre introduced the luncheon’s guest speaker, Family Law Attorney Chanda Rogers, an Associate with the Law Office of Valerie C. Faltemier, PLC. The room was attentive as Ms. Rogers spoke about how offenders of domestic violence typically abuse all members of the household, including children and pets. Domestic violence shelters are rarely equipped to accept animals, and sadly many victims stay in abusive homes rather than leave a pet behind to face torture or even death. Micah’s Place is now equipped to handle just about any family pet, so Nassau County victims no longer have to live in fear; they can bring their pet with them when they leave their abuser to start a new life.

Micah's Place-pets-bentleyStatistics on domestic violence and animal abuse:
-52 percent of victims in shelters leave their pets with their abusers.
(National Coalition Against Domestic Violence)

-Up to 65 percent of domestic violence victims are unable to escape their abusers because they are concerned about what will happen to their pets when they leave.
(Carlisle-Frank, Frank and Nielsen, 2004)

-71 percent of pet-owning women entering women’s shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets for revenge or to psychologically control victims; 32 percent reported their children had hurt or killed animals.
(National Coalition Against Domestic Violence)

Here is a short video of the Luncheon and Style Show:

Ms. Rogers described how Micah’s Place offers free legal services to vicitims, both men and women. Abusers are controlling and very often, they control the money, too. Leaving victims without access to the money for legal protection. Events like this luncheon, the Bed and Breakfast Cookie Tour, and the Purple Dove Re-sell Store help raise funds to keep the doors to Micah’s Place open.

When Ms. Rogers finished, lunch was promptly served and fashion models swept the room to show off the latest fashions for women and children.

Expect to see a lot of yellow and aqua shades for kids this spring, while Mom may be found wearing moss, muted animal prints and pale yellow, too. Long scarves and comfortable slacks were flattering and attractive, and my favorite piece was a very feminine, coral leather jacket.
