Crawl For a Cure 2016 was a Huge Success

Crawl For a Cure 2016 was a Huge SuccessThe American Cancer Society is the nation’s leading voluntary health organization, and will hold its annual Relay For Life Fernandina Beach/Yulee event “Carnival For a Cure” in Fernandina next spring.

This past Saturday evening “Crawl For a Cure” was held in historic, downtown Fernandina Beach and raised just over $3,000.00. Amelia Island was transformed into Las Vegas while participants dressed for the occasion and crawled the streets visiting local establishments raising money to help win the war on cancer.

“Seven teams participated this year and we were thrilled to raise over $3,000.00 with about 100 ‘Crawlers’ and selling around 500 prize tickets.” Said Erica Watts who organized the event.

Relay For Life is an event that brings together teams from local businesses,
schools, churches and families for fun, food, music, entertainment and a night under the stars, while team members take turns walking or running on a track. Relay For Life begins with a Cancer Survivors Lap and a reception to celebrate life. The monies raised from this event will go toward the American Cancer Society’s research, education, advocacy and patient service programs.

Sponsors who helped with this great event included The Palace Saloon, Sheffield’s at the Palace, Amelia River Golf Club, Lili Thorns Hair Artistry, Monica Hayes Makeup, Stay Strong Fitness, the Red Otter, Quality Health, Carol Odell, Amelia Island Hospitality Group, Elements Salon, the Salty Pelican, Amelia Tavern, the Green Turtle, the Crab Trap, and Alley Cats.

For information about your local Relay For Life, call Dana at (904) 391-3627, or to learn more about cancer, call toll-free anytime 1-800-227-2345 or visit the American Cancer Society Web site at www.cancer.org.

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.

In communities throughout Florida people are gathering together to help fight cancer at a unique event called Relay For Life. Relay is the American Cancer Society’s national signature activity that brings together teams of families and friends from local companies, schools, clubs, churches, and other organizations to walk around the track in relay fashion.

All proceeds raised from this event are used for cancer research, education, prevention and patient services. The five-year relative survival probability for all cancers diagnosed between 1999 and 2006 is 68 percent, up from 50 percent in 1975 to 1977. This survival rate can be increased through more research and greater community awareness of health issues. Relay For Life combines a way to share vital cancer education and programs with community members and a way to raise money to fund more cancer research.

The success began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma, Washington surgeon and
American Cancer Society volunteer, ran and walked on a local track for 24 hours, traveling a total of 81 miles and raising $27,000. Since Dr. Klatt’s one-man marathon, thousands of people nationwide have passed the “baton” and raised billions of dollars for Relay For Life’s battle against cancer.

“Survivor – Let’s Vote Cancer off the Island” is the message of this year’s Relay For Life Fernandina Beach/Yulee, being held March 5, 2016 at Main Beach Park on Amelia Island. The 12-hour event is free and open to the public.

Opening ceremonies begin at 10:00 a.m. with a welcome from Mayor Johnny Miller, and a message of hope from cancer survivor Judie Mackie. The first lap of Relay For Life celebrates cancer survivors. Anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer, whether currently undergoing treatment or in remission for 50 years, is invited to participate. Caregivers, and then participating teams, will be invited to the track.

Members from our community are encouraged to continuously walk the track representing how cancer never takes a break. There will be family games, activities, entertainment, and six live bands will perform throughout the event. Themed laps will occur at the top of each hour, and Relay teams will compete in “Tribal Challenges” to earn immunity and of course, bragging rights.

After dusk, the Luminaria Ceremony remembers all of those who battled cancer. Candles surround the track with bags marked with the names of those still fighting, those who won the battle, and those we have lost. This ceremony of light symbolizes our mothers, our fathers, our sisters, our brothers, our sons, our daughters, our friends and our loved ones. The lights remind us of hope, and our shared vision for a cancer-free future. Fernandina Beach Vice Mayor Robin Lentz, and cancer survivor Patti Jubell, will share their emotional stories, and every Relay participant is encouraged to find a way to fight back against cancer, by raising money, making a healthy lifestyle choice or speaking up for cancer patients through advocacy.

ALL proceeds from the day’s activities, as well as vendor’s booths, will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

For more information about Relay For Life Fernandina Beach/Yulee please contact Alexandra Davis at (904) 391-3643.

Bands of Relay For Life 2015

Bands of Relay for Life 2015Our volunteers are excited to offer the Fernandina Beach community five local bands for entertainment during the 2015 Relay For Life event, Hope Around the World.

These talented individuals are donating their time and their music to help us fight cancer!

Each will be performing throughout the day, so come to hear your favorite band, or bring your lawn chair or blanket and spend the day with us.

Relay For Life is a 12-hour event this year!

11:00 AM – Cumberland Sound
Started in 2012, Cumberland Sound plays your favorite music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

cumberland-sound-relay-2015The band members are:
Travis Dickey – Vocal
Jeremy Haslam – Bass/Vocals
Matt Hyde – Guitar
Jesse Parker – Guitar
Shawn Necaise – Drums/Vocals

From Kingsland, Georgia, these five guys are a diverse group of music lovers with each specializing in music from 5 different decades.

12:30 PM – Laid Back
Laid Back is a group of musicians that love to get together and jam. Organized by Bruce Beville, the assortment of talent is nothing short of amazing.

For Relay For Life, Laid Back will be playing along to our themed laps: the 50’s (think poodle skirts and greased back hair), the 60’s (tie dye anyone?), the 70’s (disco fever), and the 80’s (think Madonna and Micheal Jackson). The best costume for each theme will win an electric bicycle rental from Amelia Island Fun.

13:30 PM – The Hambone Stumps Band
The Hambone Stumps Band has thrilled audiences at private and corporate events for over three years. This band’s musicians are inspired by the Beatles, Joe Cocker and Eric Clapton.

From Callahan, Florida, The Hambone Stumps Band will be accompanying out Western Lap, the Frozen T-shirt Contest, Team Tug-O-War, and SearchAmelia’s Safari/Hunting Lap. Again, come dressed to impress as you walk laps… and you could take home a great prize!

The Hambone Stumps Band is made up of:
Hambone Stumps -guitar & vocals
Bill Smith – bass guitar
Jerry Peterson – drums, percussion
Jan Peterson – vocals, percussion

jimmy-beats-relay-20156:00 PM – Jimmy Beats

Jimmy Beats was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and raised in Orlando, Florida. He began playing guitar at the age of 13. By the time he was in high school he was playing parties, skating rinks and dance clubs.

Jimmy created Dark Beats Music in 2004 and successfully produced Dancehall, Reggae and Hip Hop music for a lengthy period of time. His tracks were licensed on MTV networks (with Punk’D, Making The Video, Making The Movie as well as other special programming).

Playing keys, guitar and bass, Jimmy is currently stepping out from behind the console to perform live.

Over the years, many musicians have influenced his music, but none so much as “Bob Marley”. His music not only transcends racial and social boundaries, but also draws you down a path that enlightens the soul.

17:45 PM – Jennifer Burns
Jennifer Burns is a singer/songwriter from Fernandina Beach, Florida who began vocal lessons when she was 11 years old. Afterwards, this young girl joined every choir and singing group she could. And now, as a young adult, all of that music is etched on her soul.

A gifted conversationalist, Jennifer knows how to read the crowd, and when you combine that with her girlish charm, this makes her a natural performer. Listeners appreciate the musical journey when Jennifer sings. It could be an old Chuck Berry tune, Leonard Cohen’s classic Hallelujah, or a current top 40 hit, one thing is sure – you will enjoy the ride!

If you have the opportunity to catch her on stage you won’t be disappointed in her soulful, sometimes gritty sound, and her natural ability to empower the audience!

Jennifer will bring us through our Luminaria Ceremony, an emotionally touching tribute to those who have fought, or are currently battling, cancer.

We hope you will join Relay For Life Fernandina Beach/Yulee on March 21, 2015, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in our community a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global Relay movement and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer.

During this 12 hour community celebration individuals and teams take turns walking around a track relay-style to raise funds to fight cancer. There will be live bands, entertaining acts, themed laps, several contests, a luminaria decorating booth, a kid’s fun zone and team booths set up to educate, inform and raise more funds to fight back against cancer. At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminaria around the track in a moving ceremony to honor cancer survivors, as well as friends and family members lost to the disease.

No matter why you take part in Relay, one thing is clear: with every step you take, you are helping the American Cancer Society save lives. Walking around a track is meant to symbolize that there is no finish line until we find a cure for cancer. With your help, we aren’t just fighting one type of cancer – we’re fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer. Relay For Life is about communities coming together to fight back against cancer. Together, we can make this 2015 Relay For Life even better!

SearchAmelia Creates a Relay for Life Team

SearchAmelia Creates a Relay for Life TeamWe all know someone whose life has been touched by cancer. This year SearchAmelia.com is fighting cancer through Relay For Life Fernandina Beach/Yulee. (Find us on facebook.)

We have been posting articles and local events on SearchAmelia since 2008 and we hope you will join us by showing your support for our efforts by making a donation to Relay for Life — big or small — toward our fundraising goal.

Relay For Life will be held at Main Beach this year in Fernandina, from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. This year’s theme is Hope Around the World and SearchAmelia has selected Kenya as our country to represent. Because cancer knows no boundries, Kenya also hosts their own Relay for Life events and our booth and its costumes and decorations hope to bring a bit of Kenya to Amelia Island. Other teams are selecting other countries like China, New Zealand and England.

There will be several bands performing, other live entertainment, themed laps, an activities zone for the children and much, much more.

The Relay movement gives everyone an opportunity to come together to honor cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and raise funds.

The American Cancer Society is putting your donation dollars to work now, investing in groundbreaking cancer research and providing free information and services to cancer patients and their caregivers. With your help, we aren’t just fighting one type of cancer we’re fighting for every birthday!

As a volunteer on the committee, I will be putting the exciting details together for a press release to be published next week. But, in the mean time, we ask you to please join our team and make a small donation!

Relay For Life will be held at Main Beach on Amelia Island, March 21, 2015, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. This year’s theme is “Hope Around the World” and teams are invited to pick a country and learn how they Relay in the selected region of the world. Then teams will decorate their booth inspired from the country they chose.

Relay For Life brings together teams from local businesses, schools, churches and families for camaraderie, food, music and entertainment, and a full day of fellowship and games while team members take turns walking or running on a track.

Relay For Life begins with a FREE Survivor’s Breakfast, followed by Opening Ceremonies and a Cancer Survivors Lap to celebrate life. In the evening, once the sun sets, an emotional Luminaria Ceremony honors those who are battling cancer, and remembers those who have lost their fight.

“This community event honors each person who has been touched by this disease while raising money for much needed cancer research, education, advocacy and service.” Said Erica Kittrell, entertainment chair of the event. “In Fernandina Beach/Yulee, our goal is to raise $40,000 for the American Cancer Society. We are grateful to the people and the businesses helping us to achieve that goal.”

Sponsors of the event include great local companies like SearchAmelia.com, Island Juice and Java, Amelia Island Fun, Putt Putt Golf and Click Simple.
