RockTenn and Fernandina Beach Fire Department Partnership

RockTenn and Fernandina Beach Fire Department PartnershipDuring RockTenn’s Fernandina Beach mill’s recent outage, the Fernandina Beach Fire Department (FBFD) conducted high‐angle and confined‐space rescue training onsite at the mill. A high‐angle rescue is used in situations where rescuers are totally dependent upon ropes to get themselves and the victim to safe ground.

To show their appreciation, the RockTenn mill donated $10,000 worth of high‐angle and confined‐space rescue equipment to the fire department, including harnesses, helmets, pulley systems, carabineers, flashlights, and gloves. The mill also donated an additional $10,000 to the City of Fernandina Beach.

“FBFD would like to thank RockTenn, Colin Campbell, and Tom Sweetser for assisting our department in obtaining the specialized equipment and certified training so that we may provide high‐angle and confined‐space rescue services not only to RockTenn but the numerous other industrial facilities on the island or anywhere in the City that may require the need for this type of technical rescue,” said Jason Higginbotham, Deputy Fire Chief. “We greatly appreciate and value the superb working relationship between us and RockTenn, and look forward to many more years of working and training together.”

“We enjoy giving back to the community,” said Tom Sweetser, General Manager of the RockTenn mill. “This is our way of thanking the City and the Fire Department for their commitment and assistance.”

“We have a long‐standing relationship with the FBFD,” said Colin Campbell, the mill’s safety manager. “We appreciate their ongoing service and are glad that we are able to give back and support the department that in turn supports the community.”
