Why do schools track ethnicity of students? A letter was recently sent to parents of students in Nassau County, Florida, that requires selecting an ethnic category for our children. The categories are set by the federal government and are used to track student enrollments and to ensure students receive the educational programs and services that they are entitled to receive.
The federal government has implemented a new way to categorize the ethnic and racial information for all students and staff that will more accurately reflect the nation’s diversity. The new form allows individuals to self-identify their ethnicity and race and to select more than one race and/or ethnicity. The new system should help eliminate double reporting of students identified with multiple races.
Shouldn’t all children receive the same services no matter what their ethnicity is?
