A Family Outing by Boat to Cumberland Island
Submitted by: Jamie Deonas
From the North end boat ramp you can see the white sandy beaches of Cumberland Island, the first barrier island in Georgia. A truly undisturbed beach that is full of wildlife including horses and exotic birds. My family and I have been to this beach many times but had forgotten just how beautiful and unpopulated it is. This past weekend we took a full lunch and a PWC (Jet Ski) over to ride for the day and had a great time. If you’ve never been you don’t know what you are missing.
Suggestions when approaching the beach, remember to tilt your outboard up and come in slow. The entire area is sand with no obstructions however you are still in Cumberland Sound and being mindful of passing boats with large wakes is high priority. Try a spot
directly across from Fort Clinch as this will keep you in good walking distance both East and West for beach combing.
