Fernandina Beach resident and artist, Wyanne Thompson, simply known as Wyanne, is the featured artist at the Blue Door Artists 2nd Saturday Artrageous Artwalk.
Wyanne and her family moved to Amelia Island four years ago, from Atlanta. She noted, “During the summer of 2007, I visited the island for the first time. After walking around downtown, and visiting the Blue Door, I knew I had to live here. A year later, we moved to the island.”
Although she’s been a career artist her entire life, Wyanne has endeavored over the past 15 years to establish herself as a prominent leader in the world of whimsical, mixed media art. She continues working with a global audience both as an artist and an instructor through inspirational internet videos and online workshops. Several of her students have visited Fernandina to see Wyanne’s works from as far away as Australia, England and Canada.
Wyanne creates fun, happy artwork that appeals to both young and old. Working in a wide array of mediums including acrylic, beeswax and resin, she creates brightly colored, surrealistic paintings with a touch of 1970’s nostalgia. Her current exhibit at the Blue Door features retro owls, swans, elephants and big-eyed girls.
“I love to create art that is a reflection of my childhood imagination and daydreams. In some of the paintings, you will find unexpected little surprises and occasionally a bit of naughtiness to them,” she explained. “I want others to look beyond the cuteness of the particular painting and draw their own conclusions and stories from the work.”
Stop by and meet Wyanne during 2nd Saturday Artrageous Artwalk, Saturday, May 14th from 5-8:00 pm. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served.
Blue Door Artists Gallery is also home to eight other local artists working in a wide variety of mediums, including textiles, painting and jewelry. The gallery and studios are located at 205 1/2 Centre Street in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. (Look for the blue doors between Seattle’s Best Coffee and Go Fish leading to the colorful staircase.)
