Community Comes Together for Fallen Soldier

Some held their hand over their hearts while others stood tall and saluted as the funeral procession of Kelly J. Mixon passed by.

Community Comes Together for Fallen SoldierWhen Nassau County, Florida lost one of their own sons to the tragedy of war, the entire community shed a tear and saw that he was escorted home Saturday evening, from the Jacksonville International Airport, by a variety of law enforcement and patriotic agencies.

Out of respect, neighbors and friends in Fernandina Beach lined the streets, joining hands on a chilly and grey Sunday afternoon in December. Some were holding their hand over their hearts while others stood tall and saluted as the funeral procession of Kelly J. Mixon made its way from Oxley Heard Funeral Home to First Baptist Church.

Specialist Mixon, who would have turned 24 years old on December 21st, was killed in Afghanistan while protecting our Freedoms.

Here is the video of our community coming together in Memory; paying honor and respect…

I’ve been following the sad story of Kelly Mixon on Search Amelia and Facebook.
On behalf of the “Old Guard” I thank Han at Search Amelia for covering this story so well.
The similarities between Kelly and I are are many.
Cavalry Trooper, Weapons Specialist – Rifle, Marksman, Sharpshooter / Sniper, Bronze Star and so on. The differences – our service was 38 years apart and his ended this way.
It makes me so sad and I wish I could say something to his family and friends to make it better.
    I can’t.
I am glad though, to see how fallen soldiers are honored now.
    Thank you again Search Amelia
