Dental Mission Trip to Brazil

Earlier this month my cousin, a dentist, and her daughter traveled to the interior of Brazil with a group of 11 from her church as a dental health team.

They arrived safely with no problems clearing customs with her medical instruments and the variety of medications she brought along. The medical equipment she used in the clinic in Brazil was almost as good as you would have here in the United States and that was a tremendous help. 75 people had already signed up for the first three days and she hoped even more patients would still sign up for her services… as she came there to work!

While Mom was busy in the clinic tending to 25 patients a day, her daughter worked with the girls auxiliary leader entertaining children with Bible stories, music and crafts in the church and in a nearby city park.

Their greatest success occurred when the mission group was given access to the public school where the dental clinic was being held. Previously, missionaries had been trying to get into this school for over three years with no luck at all. Not only did they let the Pastor’s wife and my cousin’s daughter into the classrooms to share the Gospel, but they set up an asssembly of 600 kids. Now of course my young cousin does not speak Portages, but she was able to assist with the visuals and help the children work on their craft projects.

They fell in love with a little girl named Joyce. Her mom is a prostitute and the only safe place for this child is at church.

Our publisher here at SearchAmelia speaks often of traveling being one of life’s best education sources and the girls proved to be excellent students. They learned you only have two minutes of hot water and when it came to the food, they tried everything like chicken hearts, quail eggs, mango, papaya and a drink similar to our Mountain Dew; afterall, “there is always lots of rice and beans for us to eat.”

They have returned safely home and are putting together a scrap book of their trip for a lifetime of memories!
