The Blue Door Artists will feature the paintings of Elizabeth Dion for the month of April. Sea Glyphs, her latest series, is a collection of small paintings inspired by pieces of shells found on the beach. Usually overlooked in favor of shark’s teeth and intact shells, these shells have been tossed by the sea, bored by sea creatures, eroded and encrusted. The results are endless variations of fragments bearing the signs of the creatures and elements that have left their marks. These are translated with layers of translucent acrylic paint into colorful images on 12”x12” canvases that can be hung singly or in groups. The Sea Glyph paintings will debut for the Artrageous Second Saturday Art Walk on April 10th from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. More nature-inspired contemporary paintings by Elizabeth Dion are on display along with work by the eight other Blue Door Artists during Art Walk and every day except Sundays.
Liz lives in Fernandina Beach where she paints and is also a free-lance architect. She was born and raised in Rhode Island. Northeast Florida has been her home since graduating in architecture from Rhode Island School of Design in 1974. She also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts. While working in architecture, she continued to explore various art forms and participated in workshops and classes with many wonderful local teachers. In the mid-1980’s she studied acrylic painting with artist Jeanne Pellegrino and developed a passion for the medium and for working in color. Acrylic paint is her favorite medium and as evidenced by this show, organic subject matter intrigues her and balances the usual linear structure of architecture. The Blue Door gallery and studios are located at 205 1/2 Centre St. in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. (Look for the blue doors between Seattle’s Best Coffee and Go Fish leading to the colorful staircase.) Regular hours are Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, call 904-556-9065 or see her website at www.lizdion.com or www.bluedoorartists.com.
