While skimming through the USA Today I was saddened to see that one of my favorite authors, Robert Parker, died on Monday.
His main series of books is about a tough private eye named Spenser. This particular series was made into a television series called “Spenser for Hire”. One of his other series of books is about a Police Chief named Jesse Stone, and many of these have been turned into made-for-TV movies with Tom Selleck.
I don’t get much time to sit and read these days but when I do I really enjoy the way he writes. He makes me want to take the time to finish the whole book and start the next one as rapidly as I can. My father introduced me to him back when I was in college and I have been hooked ever since. I remember many conversations with my Dad about these books. My father was an avid reader who devoured books as fast as he could get his hands on them. He also introduced me to a few other great authors, many of whom are still writing and I am happy for this.
The thing that amazes me about this story is that I don’t recall seeing anything online that would have let me know about this before I found it in the newspaper. Normally I don’t read the newspaper, with the exception of the Sunday paper, and our local paper just to see who passed away, read the police report and to find out who is advertising the old fashioned way.
The only reason I had this USA Today at my fingertips was because one of my customers was out of town and when I went to check on their house, the paper was in the driveway. Maybe that was not a coincidence. Possibly someone knew I had not heard the news yet. HMMM!!!
