Friends of the Library Offers Free Program on Cuban Culture and Folk Arts

Folklorist Dr. Bulger worked with American travel agent Catherine Sugrue of Jacksonville, and Cuba Travel Services, Inc. based in Havana, to develop a tour featuring visits to various cultural sites

Friends of the Library is offering a free presentation entitled Cuba: People-to-People Folk Arts Tour. Led by Fernandina Beach residents Dr. Peggy A. Bulger and Ron Price, this slide show and discussion will cover their experiences on a group tour of sites showcasing the folk arts, folklife, foodways and traditional culture of the Cuban people.

Folklorist Dr. Bulger worked with American travel agent Catherine Sugrue of Jacksonville, and Cuba Travel Services, Inc. based in Havana, to develop a tour featuring visits to various cultural sites, many of them being UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This tour in September 2016, included a group of 28 Americans who visited the cities of Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Havana and the rural Valley of Vinales. The exposure to the people of Cuba and learning about their lives (both the struggles and the successes) made the tour exceptional. Peggy and Ron will answer questions following this informative glimpse into the vibrant culture of the Cuban people.

This free program will be held in the Fernandina Beach Library’s Community Room at 24 North 4th Street, on Thursday, March 23, from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. To sign up, please call the Library at 904-530-6500.
